It is astonishing to me that in the year 2021, there are people participating in this fandom who see nothing wrong with trying to plot out the floorplan of someone's home based on pictures they've shared on social media, alluding to knowing someone's home address, or posting screenshots of someone's child after their parents have specifically stated they are not going to share photos of her and don't want them passed around.

I think I made it incredibly clear where I fall on the stalking issue, but in regards to the second: if you're invested enough to know that Noel has children, then you're invested enough to know that neither he nor Birdy have shared photos of their children on social media. If you haven't seen pictures of them, then THERE IS PROBABLY A REASON. If you're saying, "but it was on the internet, it's fair game to share," then you should probably re-evaluate your standards.

Please, call me toxic, and please, tell me to fuck off for actually speaking up and saying something about disgusting behavior when I see it.

My deepest apologies to any and everyone for my having boundaries, for wanting to participate in fandom in a fun and respectful way, and for wanting fandom to represent standards of basic human decency.

“I haven’t worked with Julian for a while”

Just a couple late night thoughts.

Some people might hear Noel’s reference to Julian and double acts and the above from tonight’s ITV appearance and spin it to say, “Aw, how sad. They haven’t worked together, and that’s sad. They’re not going to work together, and that’s sad. No more Boosh for me, and that’s sad.”

To that, all I can say is, okay. Be sad.

Much like Noel himself said just a couple days ago, being cynical is the easy route. It’s easy to fall back on or default to angst and sadness. We’re living under strange, strange skies… approaching nearly a year of lockdown during this global pandemic that has put a huge halt on the plans of just about any and every person in the performing arts field.

However. Before the hankies come out, why not remember that within the past year, they’ve both said they wanted to do live. Julian himself said he sees Noel nearly every day.

One of the most commendable, most unique, and most lovely aspects of the Boosh is the love and care that both the boys put into crafting the show. They stressed over getting it right, they fought for what they wanted, they called each other at all hours of the night when they thought of a solution for a scene that was holding them up. To borrow from myself earlier, they weren’t making butter, and nothing they did was to churn out “product.” Everything they did was to present something that was handmade with love and care and respect.

If Noel and Julian decide that they want to do more Boosh for public consumption, they’re not going to slap together something halfassed. Yep, Zoom exists, but who on earth would choose to use Zoom as a platform for something as special and meaningful as a reunion?

If they reunite, it will be done with meaning, the same way they’ve done everything else. They’re not going to just do something to do it. They’re going to craft it with love and care and respect for what they’ve created, and with love and care and respect for their fans, and with love and care and respect for themselves. They know their worth, and so should we. They’re worth waiting for.

Short answer: Indefinitely shelved. Just because it was completed doesn’t mean it will ever see the light of day, and does not mean it is simply waiting to be released. It ain’t as easy as the Boosh boys letting it loose. It was recorded to go hand in hand with a film that was not made. It would need to come out on the back of something huge in order to ever be released, in order to pay back the people who put money down for the project. Period. End of story.

Long answer:

2010 was quite a year for the Boosh.

Noel was scheduled to do a solo tour in 2010. In November 2009, he announced on Twitter that the tour was cancelled so he and Julian could focus on two projects: writing a Boosh film and recording a Boosh album. The two projects were supposed to go hand in hand, the album being released along with the film.

They demoed the album at the start of 2010 (in Julian’s shed) and talked to NME in May about their progress and the direction the album was going to take. Noel described it as a “psychedelic concept album,” Julian described it as being full of “various concepts,” with “each character [having] a story to tell.” It was full of different genres of music as well - “Johnny Cash surf” is both a descriptor and a hell of a combo. The Sunflash tune was let loose a couple weeks before the Festival Supreme gig in 2013; remember this for later.

Once demos were complete, the boys recorded the actual factual album at Electric Lady Studios in NYC during summer 2010; this article mentions that they were recording in June of 2010. Electric Lady is world-famous as Jimi Hendrix’s recording studio, and a huge list of amazing bands and artists have worked there over the years (Led Zep, the Stones, Bowie, AC/DC, etc.).

Here’s the deal: in order to have the once-in-a-lifetime experience of recording in one of the most amazing cities in the world, in one of the most amazing recording studios in the world, which they absolutely deserved to do, it cost m o n e y. The album was financed in part because it was going to be released simultaneously with a Boosh film, and the expectation was that it was going to sell a ton of copies, and the film was going to sell lots of tickets in the days before pirating films was the standard, and it was going to end up paying for itself.

Noel’s said that they had two or three concepts for the film: a Booshy adventure and a Rocky Horror-type musical, partially written. He’s also said that not finishing writing the film is his biggest regret. However, both boys got busy with other projects, and the film(s) were not written completely, and the album was shelved.

So, the film did not come out, therefore the album did not come out. In Noel’s estimation, in order for the album to come out, it would need to come out off the back of something HUGE, to pay back the folks who put the $ down for Electric Lady.

Would we all love to hear the album? Of course. Do we all understand that the album literally cannot be released no matter what we say or do? No. Demanding that the album be released in the year 2021, or complaining that the album isn’t out yet because “it’s just sitting there and I want it” is tacky. They can’t simply put it out for the fun of it, no matter how much they joke or snark about it on Twitter, because they had investors who would expect to make their money back from the album’s release. And it is not a rose-colored glasses, “well, some money back for the investors is better than nothing, I’d pay a lot of money for it myself as a fan!” situation. It’s black and white: no big Boosh event allowing the investors to recoup their money, no album.

Noel and Julian are two people who were so adamant that their show and their world be crafted to their standards that one of them would throw fits on set until things were done to meet their vision. These are two people so invested in what they created that when their book was released, they were involved in every detail down to the weight of the paper that was used. They’re not in it for a cash grab, they’re not in it to be slipshod; everything they did was done with the utmost care, passion, and love. That album was recorded to those same standards and there’s no doubt in my mind it’s beautiful; they made the business deal that they needed to in order to be able to record the music to their high standard. However, it has to upset them massively that they can’t release a part of what they created, and every reminder that they’re not able to do this has to be annoying or upsetting to them.

However. Both boys said last year that they want to do live; they’ve had tiny reunions at RSD in 2019 and virtually on Twitter in 2020 for listenalongs. If you want the album to come out, then it’s going to need to come out on the back of something big, and live would be something big. But, if they were to reunite and do live and appear together again as the Boosh, would we as a fandom care more about that, or about an album from ten plus years ago?

Anon, be patient. It might come out, it might never come out. It’s not up to us to decide, never has been, and never will be. Let’s look forward to anything the future might bring instead of staring back and worrying about the past.
