Slipper Game

Description:

A two-team game that utilizes slippers and works a bit like baseball. Usually played in a wide area.

Mechanics:

There will be four bases around the field, taking the shape of a cross. The home base will consist of slippers the same number of players in each team. If one team has more numbers than the other, this will be how many slippers there are on the home base. The other three bases will only be marked by one slipper each.

The two teams decide which one goes first through rock-paper-scissors (more locally known as “bato-bato-pick”.

Everyone in the team that goes first will all go to the home base and step on one slipper each. In the home base, the most important slipper is be the first one, or the one nearest to the next base. The one stepping on the first slipper will get to kick first.

The other team will pick one member who will serve the assigned kicking slipper. The other ones will attempt to catch the slipper once it has been kicked by the leading member of the playing team.

Once the leading member of the playing team kicks off the assigned slipper, they have to proceed to the next base. Everyone in the home base needs to take one slipper forward.

If the opposing team catches the slipper after it was kicked, whoever kicked it will be eliminated. If the slipper is picked up and they hit a player who’s not stepping on a base with it or before they arrive to one, they also get eliminated. If the opposing team hits a base before a player arrives and they step on it within the turn, they will also be eliminated. The player behind them will take over as the new leading player.

If not yet eliminated, the leading member will keep proceeding to the next bases, and the other members of the playing team need to be one base behind.

If a player makes their way back to the home base unharmed, they will gain one “life”. Gaining lives means you can bring an eliminated player back into the game for one life. If there are no eliminated players yet, it can be used to bring someone back if they are eliminated in the future.

The opposing team can have their turn once all members of the playing team are eliminated.

ADVOCACY

Looking back on my journey last summer, it was pretty clear to me that what I wanted to be my advocacy is something that has to do with nature. The pandemic has forced some people to go back to the more basic ways of living, and that includes me. I feel like on our journey to fitness, we have to make sure that the activities we do are more environmentally friendly. This is not to encourage treadmills and bikes and other equipments because I'm sure some people find those easier to work with, but doing this makes me think that maybe we don't really need equipments that require electricity or could only be accessed through taking a car. We only have one planet. Let's try to do our best to contribute in preserving it.

There are about 30 saplings that I have to water every morning at the beginning of this summer. One plant receives exactly one pitcher of water and I have to go back to the water pump every time I have to move to the next one. I also have to pump water into a pail several times. This entire activity alone takes more or less than one hour per day, and I try to insert a 10-15 minute workout routine on the afternoons.

On the first three days, I didn’t exactly know what exercise routines I should follow. I kind of just made everything up, as long as I’m feeling the burn and sweating a lot at the end of it. At the third day I started to look up short but effective exercise routines, and I came along some of them. Then I started to think about incorporating Sir Rocky’s Tabata method that he made us use last year, since I noticed that by the end of that semester, I was the smallest I’ve been in a very long time. I also started to think about what to target, and I decided it would be to get a flat stomach. I focused more on the abdominal area, and even though I’m not taking videos of it anymore, I’m still doing this routine and slowly adding a new set after a while to make the workout longer.

The Food Pyramid is used as a guideline for healthy eating. It groups foods according to types and how healthy they are. The size of the parts of the triangle indicates how healthy the food group is, like how the bottom, which is the widest part of the triangle, belongs to the vegetable and fruit group.

The food pyramid is designed to make healthy eating easier. Eat foods from each shelf of the food pyramid in the correct amounts each day.

For seven days, I challenged myself to eat food from the bottom two of the pyramid, specifically the grain/cereal group and the fruit/vegetable group. I had to stack up on wheat bread and cereals, and picked food that mostly consisted of vegetables. I also sometimes ate fruit with my meals as dessert.

Admittedly, it was hard to immediately subscribe to a vegetarian lifestyle, even for just seven days. First, when you're used to having at least a piece of meat in your meal, it's hard to adjust. Second, you don't usually have a choice when you're buying food from outside.

I also noticed that since these foods are easy to digest, it was hard for me to resist the temptation of straying from the challenge when I get hungry. For me, it wasn't just merely to eat vegetables, it was also to practice self-control when it comes to eating.

At the end of the week, I felt really proud of myself. Proud that I managed to get through it to the end, and proud that I became more used to eating vegetables regularly. I was proud that I was making good decisions for myself, and that also rippled into good effects for my confidence. Health isn't just about the physical side of things. It encompasses mental and spiritual aspects, and these aspects affect each other.

Welcome to my E-Portfolio

Hello! It’s Neil Lencio. This quarantine has given me too much time that sometimes I feel guilty for wasting it. I have the privilege of not worrying about work, and yet I stay at home not doing much. Recently, I decided to start exercising at least once a day again, to join some of my daily routines. I’ve always noticed that I’m a lot more confident when I exercise at least once a day, and I need that energy throughout these trying times. Losing weight has always been a goal for me, but when school was going on I never really had enough time to commit. Of course, I have been taking care of myself even back then, but I was mostly focused on my mental health, since that was what needed work at the time. Now, with this much time, it’s in my best interest to take care of my body. And I actually want to do this for myself, not because I feel pressured by beauty standards or because I’m trying to get people to like me. I want to at least achieve something for myself while I have this much time in my hands. In this E-Portfolio, I will be documenting some of my activities to take care of my body and achieve fitness.
