Ok, guys. Here they all are, in a row.
I have literally been meaning to do this project for YEARS. The imminent release of Return of the Thief led to my return to the fandom, which somehow made it feel urgent enough to actually get them done. And while there are little things I could point out that aren’t quite working how I want them to, overall I am really proud of these images.
And yes, mild spoilers are present in these. My aim here wasn’t to create spoiler-free images, which I know some people are sensitive to. It was my project, and I just wanted to choose a scene that I felt 1) Represented the book well 2) Was one I was interested in drawing and 3) I could design in such a way that would leave room for text, while still working well as an image on its own. So yes, small spoilers are present, that wasn’t a primary consideration. Sorry not sorry. :-)
These were done in Procreate, which makes process videos automatically. I’ll probably be getting those up on youtube sometime in the near future in case anyone wants to see how they came together.
I’m curious… which is your favorite?
this post inspired me to draw older gen because i imagine him growing a beard as he gets older
they are in love 😪
My face has turned from paper, to porcelain, to ivory, to steel.

(I basically just wanted to draw young Attolia. The younger + older versions came along for the ride.)
Your Majesty, please get down.
Inktober day 28: “Fall.”
“…My god is a god of balance and, of course, the preservation of Thieves, which I suppose, technically, I am not. Maybe I shouldn’t push my luck.” -THE KING OF ATTOLIA, MWT
“Would you like to hear more romance of the evening? He told me the Guard should be reduced by half, and I threw an ink jar at his head.”
The King of Attolia
Queen’s Thief Appreciation Week, Day Six: Between the Lines (Missing Scene)
The main thing that popped into my head for missing scene is the wedding night scene – everything in the text implies it was kind of a sad/frustrating day for the royal couple but I like to think there was a least a little romance in there somewhere ;)
what would The Thief do 🤔

King of Attolia vs. Thick as Thieves

A few speedpaints of Gen spying on his court, mostly an excuse to draw earrings.
“The queen!” someone shouted in alarm, and the king erupted like a wild animal caught in a snare.
He tried to sit up, and the men around him held him down. He struggled. Someone sensible used both hands to pin the hook, with its knife-edge, to the bed. Someone less sensible tried to consolidate his grip on the king’s other arm and staggered back, holding his face.
“My stitches, my stitches!” the physician yelled.
“Your Majesty, Your Majesty!”
“Damn your stitches!” he snarled. “Let me up.”
With one hand free the king was forcing himself to a sitting position, but more people were pushing him back down, all of them shouting. Someone fell back from the end of the bed, kicked solidly. The doctor cried out again, all his work going to waste.
Costis saw no good to be had by involving himself in the melee. He watched as Ornon stepped forward, seized a man efficiently by the hair, and pulled him sharply backward. The man sat down hard, and Ornon stepped into the space he had left by the king’s bed.
Bonus:
He splayed his hand across the king’s face and slammed his head back hard against the pillow. Keeping his hand planted on the king’s face, he leaned over and roared into his ear, “The queen is fine!”
This scene has the energy of a renaissance/baroque painting.
Let’s be real—the main reason I joined tumblr was to hobnob with other Queen’s Thief fans. Long live the Annux, the Boy King of Attolia, the pawn of the gods, and general smarmy pain-in-the-ass, Eugenides.
Posting these again here because the quality of the pictures in replies is a joke
Experimenting with Gen’s face…
Rott sketches - part 1
Irene in Ancient Greek style. This belongs with my ‘ ancient times inspired Queen’s Thief ‘ style experiment. I don’t have enough art history knowledge, so there may be inaccuracy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I want to do a Persian Kamet next, do you have any recs for traditional Persian art?
other ancient pieces:
Byzantine Costis
Hellenistic Gen
I lied, I lied so hard, I can’t just NOT do Queen’s Thief Appreciation Week. Forget deadlines, here’s Gen facing the fate of all thieves because I thought we could all use some extra pain in our lives.
