so has anyone done this yet or
retweet if you would uuuhHHHH die for miles morales
it’s just that, the filipino culture as a WHOLE was diminished by the whites. nothing was left for us. not our writing system, not our language (having to be manipulated by the spanish), not even the original name of my COUNTRY was saved. and for me to say this in 2015 pisses me off bc so many ppl do not know this. that our culture was practically stripped away from us and that i cannot do anything about it and it makes me really fucking mad.
“the filipino culture as a WHOLE” “our writing system” “our language” “the original name of my COUNTRY”
this post is coming from a good place pero honestly ang wild ng myth of nationalism and manila-centrism lol. philippine cultures are not a monolith. if u are going to combat imperialism and the scars of colonialism try not to fall into the same trap as the colonists
everything about the original post (and the fact that it has so many notes) is wrong and hilarious and honestly so misinformed and i could rant on about this (i am so sick of your “”””””filipinx politics”””””” but that is for another day) and i am tired so i will condense my points in short bullet points:
“our” who are you talking about? filipinos? spaniards created the political entity of the philippines. hell, the idea of a “nation” or “country” as the philippines now is a western invention. prior to the spaniards we were (and until now) NOT a monolithic culture that was the same throughout the archipelago
“our writing system” “our language” whose language? whose writing system? tagalog and baybayin? kapampangan and kulitan? cebuano? kinaray-a? ibanag? tausug? hanuno’o mangyan? ifugao? winaray? hiligaynon? rinconada bicol? kalinga? ivatan? sambal? bolinao? you do know there are so many fucking languages and ethonlinguistic groups in the philippines, right? and all languages change? and that not everything is disappearing? you do know the philippines ≠ tagalog, right? yeah, of course. filipino is so tainted by foreign influence that we are just speaking a mix of spanish and english and nothing of “our” “original language” exists with us anymore
“our culture was stripped away from us” okay, sure. but whose culture? the tagalogs? the pangasinenses? the boholanos? the negrenses? the surigaonons? the novo vizcayanos? those living in sulu, jolo, basilan, tawi-tawi? whose culture? and within those individual cultures, traditional practices aren’t as widepread as they used to be BUT THEY ARE NOT DEAD. “our culture was stripped away from us”? say that to the folklore practitioners in panay. the weavers in lanao. the musicians in palawan. house builders in batanes. tattoers in kalinga. pagtutuod in maguindanao. chanters in ifugao. potters in the ilocos. carvers in pampanga and laguna. i could go on and on but we’re too busy pretending these things only belong in an irretrievable past
PLUS the idea that foreign influence invalidates or waters down a culture is so backwards: are you saying indigenized christianity, folk catholicism, post 15th century music isn’t ours? isn’t original?
“the original name of our country” bro we weren’t even a country until the colonizers came in and lumped us all together…
“i cannot do anything about it” yes, that’s true. there is nothing left. you cannot learn a language, you cannot travel. you cannot interact with the people outside manila. you cannot read books. you cannot visit cultural institutions. we are all an anglicized, whitewashed dump with absolutely nothing retrievable!!!!! we’re doomed!!!!
hi @filipinoho. sorry, tough love. and the discussion is watery and i am typing up a mess but you need to know this. i see what you’re trying to achieve. i understand that you want to combat imperialism and patch up how neocolonialism wrecks us (we all do, we all should), but falling into a self-exoticizing counterproductive “discourse” is not the answer. 7,000 tumblr accounts cannot be this misinformed. we cannot win this way.
calm down. we’re alive. we’re still here.
Miles is up for Pre-Order on my store! He’s cheaper now than he will be when he’s stocked up so grab him while you can. Reblogs/Shares help a small business (me) out.
