Artist Present. Drawings Can Dance Too.

I always thought of abstract expressionism as a dance. Once I saw old video where Pollock throws paint on canvas. Spectacular, but not enough. I felt a need for music in order for the piece to be completed.

Now, I’m not Pollock, though I tried to accomplish the same idea of catching a momentum, living it with all the senses and finally capturing the mystic dance of a brush.

Your project makes me want to try this.  I love making art out of random lines, like scribbling or painting and then see what comes out to play, but I’ve never thought of trying to do that to music in this way.  Great idea!

It would be interesting to do this with a group if people. Give them their own canvas and see how each person responds to the music.

The theme: The Body, Play, Risk, Failure, Identity. 

I very much liked this theme. 

Body- I wanted to engage my entire body, and not just a monologue, or something simple.

Play - This was the easy part, i spend most of my day goofing around and not really taking much seriously. 

Risk and Failure - I feel like these two go hand in hand, without the option of failure, there is no risk. 

Identity - Could i figure out how someone confronts something uncomfortable head on? 

I was originally going to try and do a piece attempting to piss some people off, but i really needed to pass all my classes this semester, and suspension was definitely not a good idea. Some people thought the idea of a random pillow fight was great, others just looked at me with a blank face, and one guy even threw the pillow back at me and got angry. 

That guy needs a life.

Project 5: the artist is present So for this project is chose the verb “to shatter”. When I learned about this project I knew I wanted to do something with shattering glass. I like the noise it makes and the way the shards fly. I decided to use glass ornaments and throw them on the ground. I thought it was fitting for this time of year with the over commercialization of everything. It is also a statement about we tend to put so much focus on the temporary things during the holiday season. The decorations, gifts, and food, will all decompose and be destroyed. After I recorded it, I decided to manipulate the image a little. I like how the shards are more visible now but I also lost a little bit of the colors. I also played Christmas music in the background but it is not very loud because I wanted to focus on the sound of shattering glass. If I had had more glass ornaments I think it would have been better but I am happy with the results. It was very fun shattering glass!

Reading and film viewing #5

Performance art as existed since the beginning of history in the form of plays and poetry readings and is presently used as popular form of social art. It’s history however has not been a consistent one. It has had periods of popularity and times of silence. Much of this is due to the political and social climates in the world. The audience-performer relationship provides another layer to the art piece. “Performance is the expression of artists who which to challenge the viewers perceptions of the art and the limits of those perceptions”. From Futurism to present day, performance artists have used their performances as a means to gain access to a wider audience and to “shake up the public attitude towards art, life, and culture”. The Dadiists and the surrealists were first poets and cabaret artists who fused their performances with their fine art. By the end of WWII performance art emerged as a medium all unto itself. Today performance art is extremely varied. It has been acknowledged as an important art medium even if art critics still struggle to classify it. 

Marina Abramovic was born in 1946 in Belgrade Yugoslavia. In the 1970′s she studied art and chose performance art as her medium. She believed that her body should be both the subject and the medium of her art work. In her art, Abramovic explores the physical and mental limits of her being. She believes that she should create “works that ritualize the smile actions of everyday life like, lying, sitting, dreaming and thinking”. In one of her most highly acclaimed   pieces, Abramovic sits at an empty table at the MoMa and invites the public to sit with her. Her expression never changes and she never speaks or reacts to the audience. She said it was her most demeaning and draining piece. Abramovic wanted to create a relationship with the audience and create an energy dialogue. She wanted to “achieve a luminous state of being and then transmit it”. In her art, Abramovic confronts the stereotypes and preconceptions  of what art really is. 

After reading and watching these two pieces, I have a greater appreciation for performance art.I have alway been intrigued by it but I have not always understood the “why” behind it. Some of it seemed strange. But that really is the point. It is meant to push the boundaries of what we think art is and to create a  relationship with the audience.

I thought it would be interesting to try and see what another species would react to humans. Would they try to fit in and become one of us, or would they be disgusted by our outbursts and violence?

My one minute movie. I have been really inspired by social art lately. It’s just something that I’ve been questioning. If you are putting  your art out there on social media, shouldn’t it make a statement or bring to light some problem? Not that all art should necessarily be social or political, but since the world sees it, shouldn’t you want to make your voice heard? So for this project, I focused on things every person needs. Not just physical needs but emotional needs. Many people who are pickers in the trash dumps around the world, have no hope of getting out of the trash. Their circumstances prohibit themselves a way to better their lives. Many kids in the Conga and around the world have been forced into the battle. They wish for peace so they can just be kids and don’t have to kill. Lastly, orphans in Guatemala just want to be loved and part of a family. All things that we as humans need and things many in the Western world have been fortunate to have. I hope you like it and it makes you think.

Exercise 4D

My last video stopped working, so I am posting this one.  The video is from WWII and the song is WAR by Edwin Starr from 1969. I believe it was in protest of the Vietnam War.  I used World War II to show the devastation that war causes.  WWII stopped the annihilation of groups of people, so the question is: Are wars bad?  .

I think it is great you’re exercising your voice.  I wish more people would when it comes to things like this.  And there are many attitudes that think if you’re poor it means you’re a freeloader or lazy.  Yet few realize that these countries are became? are becoming? turning? (more) poor because corporations and governments go in and ravage and pollute their environments making them dependent on the capitalistic system!  More dependents = more profits, and/or they just use and exploit them.  :(   I just got chewed out the other day by a “friend” saying that I’m (basically) a “feminist asshole” and my dreams of speaking out more about these issues will never amount to anything and that I should just give up because nobody will ever change.  Although it hurt and made me doubt myself, I decided that if I helped even one person in despair, or one child, or animal, or a little piece of the environment, or another with more privilege to see and stand up, then that is better than doing nothing at all.  Even if I’m a “feminist asshole” in the process.  LOL But funny because I don’t fully identify with any particular groups.  *shrugs* So I’m happy to see your touching video!  If you’re really passionate about this, don’t ever give up no matter how loud the peanut gallery yells!  Use their thunder to propel you.  <3

Thanks for your kind words. Yea, I'm not sure anyone in my life feels I'll make a difference either but that's ok. You sometimes just need to put it out there anyway. I put my video on facebook and not one fried liked it. But even if it makes them stop and think for a second that there's a whole other world out there of people with struggles bigger than ours, then it was worth it. It gets them out of their own world for a minute.

I saw this video and immediately thought I had to do it with this song. I changed the speed in some spots to give emphasis. I also deleted parts of the video and audio so they would fit together better. I love how the little guy fell down at the end. I used IMovie on my Mac and had some struggles with it but once I figured it out, it was not too hard. I made another video using this song and a compilation of video clips from super hero movies but the copywrite laws wouldn’t  let me post it.

Reading Response

The article Vanishing and Becoming by Sean Cubitt was indeed a very long read but it was also very interesting. Cubitt discussed many philosophical ideas surrounding the creation of art and image projection. He states that many believe that  art was really first created by a maiden outlining the silhouette of her lovers shadow. This myth contradicts what I’ve always been taught which was art was created by the cavemen as a means to communicate. But the idea that art was created out of the desire to capture a shadow or a reflection, is really a more logical theory because without light, there would be no images to capture. No images to draw on the cave walls. Cubitt goes on to say that people started experimenting with light and image projection when they realized they could project a shadow on a wall with a light and their hands. The very first audience of a moving picture believed that it was some trick or illusion. Some even believed it was haunted somehow. The first projectors where not accepted at first and the ”machinery of projection stood accused of being the ideological instrument of oppression regardless of what material was shown”. Many people believed that the recording of images somehow devalued the original image.  The theory that “representing leads not only to the loss of object but to the loss of the self” then became a discussion that many artists used in their works. The artist Czarnecki Nascent created a digital image titled Figures Present and Absent (2005) in which the figures were almost transparent and blurry but still visible forms. They are very ghost like; of this world but not completely in this world. I feel this image exemplifies the argument within this article. When we capture an image, we bring that new image to life but also take way from the beauty of the original image. I feel however that Cubitt is missing the point that both the new projected image and the original are both beautiful in their own right and society should respect both as they are. 

In the chapter, Words and Sounds, we learn the many uses of written and spoken words or sound in the art world. Written words can be used as the art itself such as  in calligraphy, the beautiful art of handwriting words, or just alone as the text itself. Some artists use simple words to make a statement such as Jenny Holzer in her piece called Truisms. Holzer uses many philosophical statements all in the same font, arranged alphabetically. The length of the lines are different but the font gives the piece unity and emphasizes the meaning go the words. Some artist use the words within an image such as Lalla Essaudi in her piece Converging Territories #12.  The women in the photograph are draped in cloth covered in Arabic texts as are their faces. Sound in art can also have many uses. It can be no verbal sounds as in Edvard Munch’s Scream where we can imagine the sound coming from this ghost like figure or actual sounds as in movies or television. The sound of a drip of water in a silent movie theater can be equally as powerful as the image of a man covering his mouth as a statement of silence.  With all the advances of technology, there are many ways to manipulate both the written and the spoken word to make a statement in your art. I believe we have just scratched the surface of what we can do with words and sounds.
