  After several attempts, I was finally able to post this video. I’m definitely not completely satisfied with how it turned out and I will be editing it and changing it, but overall I really enjoyed doing this project and I learned a lot. I have never used premiere before and I found it to be a really fun and useful program. 

    For this project, I wanted to experiment with creative lighting. I thought that candles and fire going out were great examples of vanishing and becoming, so I focused on that. I kept the room completely dark and used candles as my only form of lighting. I also experimented with blending clips and opacity, because I love those effects. For the audio, I wrote a short piece of music on my guitar that expressed the mood I am attempting to convey. I plan on learning much more about editing, because I feel that with more knowledge I could create a much more consistent and visually pleasing work of art.

4D Project 5: Performance Art

“One-Minute Exchange of Objects Between Two Lovers”

Physically intimate relationships often begin in chaos. Between two people, there can be a push and pull of information while trying to understand one another, and opening up can be a struggle. Sometimes the initial revealing of oneself to another person is awkward, and sometimes, a person reveals more than he or she meant to. Over the course of a relationship, gender roles play a part in the domestic routine. As I review this performance on film, my submission in my relationship and my unintentional adherence to a female gender role of submissiveness is apparent as I wait for my partner to act and then I react. This is an unplanned and surprising reaction, especially since this is my project and I typically lead our collective creative endeavors. Further, successful intimate relationships engage in an exchange of information, which in this piece is represented by the exchange of numerous objects, an exchange which is at times violent, at other times, calm. To be specific, my own relationship dynamics are demonstrated in this piece as my partner and myself throw clothes at one another, undress in front of each other, and gently blow silver flake on each other. In the style of Marina Abramovic’s work, our unplanned, in-the-moment reactions exhibit the ebb and flow of our relationship, which centers on mutual giving, receiving, and reacting to one another in myriad situations featuring a variety of stimuli.

4D Project 4: Vanishing and Becoming

For a few years, I’ve toyed with this notion  mostly inspired by the poet Baudelaire, the melancholy beauty of life. That is, life is both lovely and terrible, sometimes all at once, sometimes teetering back and forth between the two. In this assignment, I represent this concept by the use of light-reflecting objects, and particularly through the repetition of two bright scenes that ultimately triumph in a symbolic rounding out of the piece. A tilted perspective is used several times as a means of modifying one’s ability to watch within a traditional frame, as changing one’s perspective is important in balancing beauty and melancholy. Beauty and melancholy, i.e. light and dark, co-exist, and draw from one another, though with the right perspective, beauty is much more brilliant.

These gifs have been the most fun project to date. Going forward, I envision many late-night gif-making sessions, and annoyed friends whose Facebook timelines I will now post them on.

In terms of art history, the process of making gifs allows individuals to draw from so many historical art forms, which establishes gifs firmly in my mind as the medium of the millenial generation and the apex of postmodernism. Everything that has come before can be compounded into an array of gifs, from the artful to the mundane. 

As in the gifs I created for this project, photography provides an excellent jumping off point, as does a brand new Photoshop project created using only Photoshop tools and no external images. The gifs created solely in Photoshop are definitely my favorite. 

I plan to better utilize the number of pixels in order to create a sharper image in future gif projects.

This is an episode from Will and Grace when Jack and Karen are at a wedding they don’t want to be at.  Both are trying not to give into their addictions (coffee and alcohol), when they get into a fight.  This scene is when they resort to slapping each other to “get it together!”  One of my favorites scenes. My GIFs need a little work, but its fun trying to create them.  I can’t tell if this GIF is working or not.  It runs, but then it stops.  Any feedback would be awesome.  Thanks!  ***Update, my file was too big.  Apparently Tumblr only accepts up to 1 mb***
