“Congratulations, that is an accomplishment in itself.” Being a college drop out he couldn’t help but admire others who stuck with the programs. “Is it a family business sort of thing?”
“I’m used to being a princess and everything but the whole being showered in candy deal is quite nice. I’m just sad I can’t trick-or-treat anymore.” Zara laughed. “Oh, I agree, there’s first graders watching horror films these days. Like Waternoose says, kids are getting harder and harder to scare.” She nodded with a smile. “I’m sure he does. Everyone loves being spoilt.”
“There’s not much reward in buying bags of candy, is there?” Nell quipped rhetorically, bowing his head while he smiled bashfully. “If that really is the case then I’m happy not to be teaching.” Though he was certain he’d be the wimpiest strict professor ever.

Effy got inside the flower shop and immediately felt better, she had to admit it was hot outside. Hot enough that there was a light sweat on the back of her neck, she should have tied her hair up. She placed her books down on a near by surface. “I am, but these are for work, I’m a librarian. Eff-Eliza, people who know me usually call me Effy.” She shrugged sheepishly.
A fresh smile glowed on Nell’s features as he found they had something in common. “You must get a bit stir crazy at times working in such a quiet place, but I imagine that’s a big part of the appeal ay? It’s similar for me, actually. Nell’s my middle name, my mother set the precedent in that case.”
“Aw, it’s okay! If you ever need anything, I’m your gal! And thank you! I’m not quite sure what I’m planning to dress up as. Maybe SuperGirl!”
“How long have you been studying your trade? Classes must be very interesting for you. What a great idea, it sounds like a reasonable project too.”
“Kid friendly is good. I’m always something Disney.” Zara agreed with a nod. “And besides, I don’t think I could pull off scary. And it might scare the children.” She shrugged. “Oh, that’s adorable! I love pets in Halloween costumes, they always look so cute but so unimpressed.”
“Hey, you really can’t beat being a princess for a day--and getting showered with candy for it.” Nell reasoned, his palms opened in a small shrug. “So many of the kids I know are much braver than I am.” He chuckled. “Petrie gives me no choice but to spoil him, even if it’s against his will, but I think, deep deep down, cats enjoy it.”

“No, my pop and I always wanted one but my dad is allergic, so.” He shrugged, he was on his own now so he could get his own cat, but he was still getting used to taking care of himself solely, he didn’t want to bring an animal into it.
“That explains why you wouldn’t know of the cat laws then.” Nell joked again, always in a friendly manner. “But don’t worry, the less you know the better.”

Effy forced her mouth into a straight line, nodding slightly. “Okay.” She wasn’t sure why he was being so kind when she didn’t deserve it but she didn’t want to question it too much and put him off. With her books stacked on her arms she waited for him to lead the way,
It took only a few steps before the pair entered the humble flower shop. There were other customers and a woman standing at register. Naturally it was cooler indoors to keep the stock fresh. “You could set your books down... are you a student? --I’m Nell, by the way.”

August chuckled and shook his head. “I didn’t know there was a cat law.”
“Have you ever owned a cat?” Nell inquired with a smile.

“Of course I would! I’m working and studying to be a designer. This is what I love to do! And I’m very good friends with the owner of a fabric store around here, so I get discounts. I’d love to make you a costume!”
“Oh goodness--well, that’s.. very lovely to know, and for you to offer. You’re very generous. I don’t think that, in my case, it would be necessary, but thank you very much. I can only imagine how magnificent your costume will turn out.”

Kit offered one of his lopsided grins, pleasantly surprised as always to see the ginger. Blue eyes did a quick once over of the younger man, noting the superhero folder in his dainty hands “Yer not interruptin’ nothin’ important, just a lazy day wit’ me girls.” Amaia scampered away and the Irishman took the time to take the folder “Real gooda ye’ to bring it by, as always.” Amaia reappeared out of nowhere and with her gone Kit had relaxed into the door frame, and she zipped past him to grab Nell’s hand “Come see Cristina, mister Nell! Come see her!” Kit straightened up, a bit stiff now that his daughter wasn’t inside “Maia, I’m sure he has things to do.” She shrank beside the other man “Cristina sick, da’! She wanna say hi!” The man sighed “I’m sorry, ye really don’t have to.”
Kit’s reassurance was actually the very reason Nell considered dropping by at all, but the paperwork was much too important. He hated the idea of pulling the very busy man away from his free time--but since the errand was complete and Amaia was very much making her presence known he supposed he hadn’t made any waves at all. “Of course, Mr. Wins--” The tall ginger suddenly became short as the small hand tugged him near the six year olds level. He patiently considered the exchange but found himself smiling suddenly. It wasn’t often that he witnessed the Winslow’s in their natural habitat. The girls were much too small, and precious, telling the formidable Irishman what was best. Clearing his throat once the attention came back to him to make a choice he straightened up and bashfully glanced between the pair, ending at Amaia. “The sick always need at least one visitor in order to get well. I just wish I had brought something nice for her--not just the homework.” Had he known he would have plucked an orange daylily from his vase. Before he stepped inside though he looked to Kit, “I’d hate to impose.”

“Well, if you ever think of what you’d like to be, I can easily design and make you a costume! Halloween is my favorite time of the year!”
“--Y-you’d do that? Isn’t it expensive to make a fitted costume?” Nell stammered. “It must be! I hope you don’t make too many offers otherwise you’d have a line down the block.”

August chuckled in realization, glad the name was actually strange and not something simple that he had just misread for no reason. “It’s okay. You’re going to costume your cat for Halloween?”
“Absolutely. What kind of cat owner would I be if I didn’t? It’s like the law or something.” Nell joked.

“Groups are always hard to organize though, I might just save myself the trouble and do a group of two. Did you have any ideas for yourself?”
“A pair would be easier to manage.” Nell chuckled, understanding how trying the alternative could be. “I considered The Wizard of Oz since it’s kid friendly... my cat would be dressed as the Cowardly lion so the Scarecrow would be easy to put together.”

“HOLY shit, that’s perfect, go with the Wizard of Oz, dude. Who would you wanna be?”
Nell was surprised by the reaction, warmth collected in his cheeks. “Probably the Scarecrow... I have a brain! But he’d be a bit easier to put together.” No matter what he chose Nell feared he’d look silly anyway. “What plans do you have?”

“That’s… that’s adorable, man. I wonder if my wife will let me get one for our dog. Or, you know, a cat.”
“You really should, they sell them everywhere--which is exactly why I ended up buying this one on impulse. Petrie is all I have when I come home though so it’s natural I spoil him rotten.”

Effy took the book from him. She had been so used to people being just as rude as he was when she was like this that it took her by surprise when he wasn’t. She turned to walk away but the guilt made her stop and face him. “Look I’m-” she sighed “I’m just having a tough time, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have taken it out on you.”
Nell looked toward the woman, his heart settling in his chest. This city was much too fast and rough around the edges for someone of his disposition but at least his patience had paid off this time. “It’s no problem, um maybe you’d like to come inside? It’s quite hot to be out in the sun without a bottle of water.”
