I genuinely cannot explain to a non-writer what it feels like when a chapter suddenly clicks. it's not satisfaction. it's not relief. it's this horrible specific feeling like you just remembered something you never knew. like the story was already there and you finally stopped being in the way of it. i don't know what to do with that feeling. i just close the laptop and stare at the wall for a bit.

You actually cannot skip to being good at a creative endeavour that you haven't put much practice into. You cannot trick your way out of the 'knows that your work is not what you want it to be but don't know how to improve it' stage by planning or reading or talking about it really really hard. At some point you just have to craft through it until your brain finds it's own unique way back to the 'everything I make slaps' stage and be prepared to start the cycle all over again. You just have to make that project you're excited about slightly less good than you want it to be. (Says this standing in a pool of blood and covered in blood and also coughing up a little blood)

I'm generally the person who tends to jump to every hobby I see before my eyes, but what changed my attitude towards it was a story I read in a book. The author was talking to a really skilled guitarist and said "ah man I'd love to play guitar as nicely as you do" to which the guitarist replied "well, I play the guitar every day for at least 5 hours. Would you love playing the guitar for 5 hours a day?"

So every time I think "oh this skill/hobby/endeavour looks really cool, I should learn it" I force myself to ask "do I want to do the hobby for several hours per week or do I just want to enjoy the fruits of craft without actually willing to put in the effort required for it?" Usually the answer ends up being the latter, and so I don't actually pick the hobby in question. Maybe I watch some videos about it instead or get a trinket from someone who already mastered said hobby.

It did not save me from buying way too much yarn I never ended up touching, but I avoided many other similar pitfalls that way.
