Ohaguro is the Japanese word for dyeing one’s teeth black. It was popular in Japan until the Meiji era, and it is also practised in the south east parts of China, the Pacific Islands and southeast Asia. Tooth dyeing is mainly done by women, though occasionally men do it as well. It is medically beneficial, as it prevented tooth decay, in a similar way to modern dental sealants.
