“ Throw down your arms. ”   Vane’s graveled voice cut through the chaos. It was a warning as much as an offer of pardon. Which of those two things would ultimately prevail was dependent on the response he received from the village rebellion ( if one could even call this meager gathering of townsfolk a rebellion ).

“ And you might be spared. ”

   Like a sea of fire around her that never ebbs, only flows, only sinks around her, Neoma surmised the chaos, surmised innocent suffering -- and clutched the handle of her weapon only tighter. 

   Bjorn came barking, close on her heels, and immediately sunk towards the ground, teeth flashing when he saw the tenseness in his master’s frame. 

   “Only a man searching for peace and a man afraid surrenders without a fight,” she began, “and you don’t seem to be here for peace.” 

   How, after all, could she leave bloodied, bruised, and still fighting townsfolk alone when she had a real weapon? 

   “Leave these people be, and I’ll cause no harm for you and yours.”
