every time i think about overwatch's orientalism i go a lil more insane. 5 japanese characters all of which are tied to a very stereotypical mythologized version of japan. they're some of the few explicitly magical characters. all of them are part of clans and lineages and shit. every map that takes place in japan is an orientalist fairy land with idyllic old looking villages with shrines and gates and cobblestone and zero utility poles in sight. this game is so incredibly racist

what's interesting to me is that no other asian characters get this treatment. mei is a climate scientist or something. diva is a gamer. lifeweaver and symmetra are scientist. something about japan specifically makes the overwatch devs get a boner for the image of a permanently ancient magical other, japanese characters are simply not allowed to be contemporary

you know how there's legacy products that kinda kick around after their formula is updated, a sort of worse version of something that already isn't very good, but which still exists because sometimes someone spent long enough with it that they get an inexplicable craving to have something worse

anyway I've spent the past few days thinking about those fucking awful php webgames with the prototypical energy systems that are just timers on everything, and I've been thinking, they're not good, but we don't always eat what's best for us. or what actually tastes good. or what still exists.

I’ve been saying this forever in Japanese-speaking spaces but if a political group you hate is trying to claim something well-known as a symbol try your best not to let them. Calling them “the [color] party” or referring to them using an emoji or something like that is easier if you think they’re disgusting, but don’t help them claim the color and the emoji as theirs, for example. Because a symbol is powerful, and it’s hard to get back something when it’s claimed by someone else. I mean I was a Germaboo and I’m from an ex-Axis country so I know what happens when a dangerous group has a convenient symbol. Like there’s at least one queer American person who can no longer wear their favorite red cap they got before 2015. Don’t give another red cap to a group you hate. Do you know what I mean

Guy makes a really stupid decision and gets in a car accident -> no real damage from accident but insurance goes up -> starts beating himself up over his stupid decision -> gets depressed -> starts to realize he's single and had crash been worse he'd die alone -> realizes he's never had a relationship or even a crush and starts wondering what he'd want out of a relationship -> starts to realize he doesn't really like girls so he thinks he must be gay -> realizes he likes girls and boys about the same amount, so he must be bi -> later realizes that "same amount" is none at all -> he's ace
