Setting the stage for the AU... --
In this universe, scientific advancement of humans has slowed to just about nothing. Humans are stuck in the early/mid-2000s technology-wise, the ways to progress dwindling further and further every year. Many have accepted it. Some haven't but this isnt about them and I don't care. Also, there's a bunch of magic fish. While humans and mermaids (who absolutely suck up to them) are on decent terms, humans and sirens... are not. Sirens hunt and eat humans. Humans hunt and... I dunno, I guess you could eat a siren if you really wanted to. Would it taste good? Don't ask me. But humans and sirens really don't like each other. There's lots of scattered siren kingdoms near human residences-- not good. Bad. Boo. Hunting sirens is basically the Salmon Run equivalent ill get into this later
This AU focused on a certain pirate (Rider), the crew (Team Yellow-Green), and the insane things he finds while trying to get money to sustain himself, his friends, and his ugly blue son. And also there's a fuckass fish that shows up at some point.

It's color coded. Ooohhh you wanna know what the colors mean so bad. Well I'm gonna TELL YOU.
Blue : Humans. Just regular ass humans. There's more than 6 humans out there but those are the important ones.
Central Kingdom residents (Inkopolis Plaza/Square equivalent) ⬇️
Red : Surface siren. These guys are what everyone thinks of when they think of sirens. Prized for their scales, fangs, fins... lots of things, really, surface sirens are the most common in typical ocean areas. As their name implies, they live closer to the surface-- although many of them do live further down. They're the ones that sing to lure poor sailors to their demise. evil karaoke 😭😭🙏🙏🙏 Many have fallen victim to them. Many will continue to fall victim to them. The average surface siren is around 7-8 feet. They're the "dominant" species of siren, being the most common and most encountered. They're a very social species, often forming "teams" of 4. No more, no less. They can also live on land without going back in water for about 3 days.
Yellow : Deepsea siren. A subspecies of siren adapted to live in the abyssopelagic and hadopelagic zones. They've completely lost the ability to sing, sacrificing it for survival in the harsh pressure and cold of the depths. They're much larger than the usual surface siren, averaging around 15-16 feet. They are also naturally stronger. Deepsea sirens require either blubber or muscle to be able to Actually Fucking Live where Everything Else Gets Crushed To Death. They can also have both. But if you're not eating well you'll probably get crushed or freeze. Deepsea sirens are viewed as monsters most of the time. Surface sirens forced them down as a means to "protect" the other subspecies-- really, an act fueled by hatred. Although tensions are less currently, they are certainly still there. Many surface sirens are still scared of deepsea sirens and have heard many a horror story. Deepsea sirens are still social, despite the conditions they dwell in. Some of them still form teams.
White : Mermaid. They're significantly more humanoid than all types of siren. While mermaids themselves are generally an extremely conservative and bigoted society, some mermaids have either fled to siren territory or were shunned from their own species and forced into siren territory as an attempt to get them killed. There's not many mermaids living in siren society, but the few that are will certainly tell you it's better than their own species. Mermaids are usually human sized (typically 5-6 feet). Mermaids who are living in siren society typically try and join teams as to avoid being ostracized any more. Mermaids are also typically very set on covering up and appearing "modest" to suck up to humans, while sirens are all about flaunting their shit.
Unnamed Desert residents (The Splatlands/Splatsville equivalent) ⬇️
Cyan? Teal? : Skipper siren. Named after mudskippers, these sirens evolved to live in areas where water isn't always an option. They grew mudskipper-esque "leg" fins, gaining the ability to move on land in their true forms more efficiently. Skipper sirens can survive on land longer than a typical surface siren. They can last several more days without water. Is it comfortable or recommended? No. Can it happen? Yes. These guys are suuper social. They still form teams. And even then, a lot of their teams are interconnected. They're also a lot more clothed than the usual butt ass naked surface/deepsea siren. They like to find scraps outside and wear them. Skipper sirens are only a little smaller than surface sirens-- averaging around 6-7 feet. (Six seI'm very sorry.)
It's not very common for other subspecies of sirens to survive in the harsh conditions of the desert. You'll really only see skipper sirens-- unless there are many adaptations made to help the survival of another subspecies.

Some trivia thingies :-)
All sirens have humanoid forms-- originally intended as desperate measures for if wooing humans with song wasn't working. However, every siren (even deepsea sirens, who can't sing) retains this ability, even if they aren't the biggest false romantic. Using these forms is very energy consuming-- they're used scarcely, and if they have to be used for long periods of time, the siren will usually be caught sleeping to maintain & regain energy to keep up the form.
Sirens' system of time is slightly different. They have minutes, hours, days, weeks, months... but a sirenic year differs drastically from a human year. For sirens, 12 months is a cycle, and 10 cycles is a year. 1 sirenic year is 10 human years. 1 sirenic cycle is 1 human year.

Skaby and Babiators. skull used to be a sopping wet (WELL NO SHIT) big eyed sad and afraid little thing until he hit adolesence and suddenly realized that was dumb asf and there was no reason to be that scared he has his friends and himself. Then he was more Skull-like. Also he grew into his large eyes. Aviators was pretty normal save for half his face being underdeveloped
skull baby is so big because hes a deepsea siren. and one above average size at that. Hes trying to hide and his size isn't helping him. Aviators is regular surface siren baby size
because skull was so afraid of like everything he didnt have many friends, even within the community of thr central kingdom deepsea sirens. Not only was he a crybaby scaredy cat to the other pups he was also just Weird (autistic) Eventually him and Aviators meet when Skull gets lost and strays too close to the surfsce. Aviators was like one of his first friends... they were both kinda scared of each other (aviators was scared of skull bc he is a big scary deepsea siren. skull was scared of aviators because everything made him afraid) and they bonded over being weird and eventually also stopped being scared of each other and were like best friends ever. they would kill for each other. After Aviators and Skull get closer Aviators decides to introduce him to his other friends (Stitch & Paisley) hence the forming of Team Purple. Yay

- She's 163 (human) years old! (16.3 sirenic years)
- her parents Aren't Alive. When she was much younger, she saw either the S4 or Team Purple competing in something and noticed how the leader was so... protective over his teammates. She decided to approach him and just said some bullshit like "Hey skull s4 my mom died. Can you be my mom. Abc to be .y mom" and skull was like "????????????? What. Okay." He did do what he could to take care of her (despite their difference in subspecies) up until she was ~13 sirenic years old where he told her she had to be more independent. He'd still do whst he could if she needed his help but like he can NOT be a full time girl dad he has things to do. He is very defensive of his hprrible daughter

Anyway the actual question: you've mentioned mermaids are bigoted, what are their views on disability? And how much do they value appearance? If someone has a genetic mutation that makes them only look different and doesn't disable them, what would the mermaids think of that?

OUUHEHHH OKAY. I like this question thank you for making me Think. Mermaids, unsurprisingly, think those with disabilities are "lesser than" and like. Inhuman but for mermaids, especially ones that affect one's physical appearance. They're all about beauty and charm. If your appearance isn't spotless or you're unable to properly charm another, you're not one of them. Usually, if a mermaid is born physically disabled/with genetic mutations, they're left in "brute" (siren) territory to die. Most of the time they die. Sometimes by sirens looking for food (they kill and eat mermaids sometimes), sometimes by other causes. Rarely, they'll get actually taken in by something. Sirens, other mermaids who aren't as bigoted and pity the poor little thing, humans... whatever else dude idk. Mask is an example. He's not only physically disabled (albeit an invisible disability) (osteogenesis imperfecta #PROJECTING), he also is PART SIREN and has markings deemed "unpleasant." And he's transgender so that too. Mask was born with markings and more sirenic features (because he's. Wow. Part surface siren. Like 1/4 or whatever i forgot what i had his percentage as.) and was immediately shunned. His parents did keep him for a little while (because maybe the markings and his fucked up bones would go away after a while!) (THEY DIDNT) but eventually booted him out into siren territory, where he met Army and then got introduced to the rest of the S4.
Ok all that to say mermaids think disabled people suck (BECAUSE MERMAIDS ARE BAD!!!!!!) and appearance is something they typically value more than even friends or family. Theyre really self centered. If you're not spotless and neurotypical and cishet and able bodied and "normal" looking they hate you
