Lost in the Depths
The cave swallowed them whole. Jax and Marcus, two powerfully built men with broad shoulders and thick, corded muscles, trudged through the narrow passage. Their sleek black neoprene wetsuits clung to their bodies, still dripping from the underground river they had crossed earlier. Heavy rubber boots squelched with every step, the thick soles caked in mud. Headlamps strapped to their foreheads cut thin beams through the suffocating darkness, illuminating jagged stalactites that hung like teeth above them.
“We should’ve turned back at the fork,” Marcus muttered, his deep voice echoing off the wet stone walls. His powerful chest rose and fell heavily under the tight neoprene as he squeezed through a tight gap.
Jax wiped water from his face, the beam of his headlamp dancing across the glistening rock. “Too late now. The rope gave out behind us. We’re not getting back that way.”
Hours blurred together. The cold seeped through their suits despite the insulation. Their once-bright headlamps began to dim, the batteries slowly dying. The air grew heavier, thicker with the scent of damp earth and minerals. No matter which tunnel they chose, each path ended in a wall of rock or a drop into black nothingness. They were truly lost.
Exhaustion finally forced them to stop in a small chamber. The last of their headlamps flickered weakly, then went out completely, plunging them into absolute darkness.
For a long moment, only the sound of their breathing filled the void—deep, steady, but edged with fear.
“Jax…” Marcus’s voice was low, almost a whisper.
“I’m here.”
A rustle of wet neoprene. Then another. Strong arms found each other in the dark. Jax pulled Marcus close, their muscular bodies pressing together, the cold rubber of their suits squeaking softly. Marcus’s thick arms wrapped around Jax’s back, holding him tight. Their soaked boots shifted as they sank to the cave floor, clinging to one another for warmth, for comfort, for the simple proof that they were not alone.
In the perfect blackness, with no light left to guide them, the two powerful men held each other—heartbeats steady against damp neoprene, breath mingling in the cold air—waiting for whatever came next.
