I've never really talk about my Durge's backstory over here, but the puppet master / puppet imagery is very suiting for Maeth (my durge) and Bhaal's dynamic.
Attempt to summarize his backstory:
Maeth was created by Bhaal, but did not grew up at the temple, he was taken in by wizards who raised him, took care of him until the day his urges manifested for the first time and he ended up killing them without understanding why he did so, as he was still a child. During his childhood and teenage years, Maeth had to live on his own in the streets of Baldur's Gate as a petty thief. Some strangers were kind enough to offer him shelter from time to time but they'd all know the same inevitable bloody fate. Maeth felt helpless towards his urges, he grew terrified of them, of loss, of harming others. Thus he ended up isolating himself, despite the fact that all he ever wished for was to belong somewhere, to feel wanted and loved. Agonizing in his own solitude.
The thing is that, it was Bhaal who actively took everything away from him through his urges, only to break him, in order to turn him into a malleable puppet for Him to use to enact His will through. Which worked disgustingly well, as when Maeth finaly found his way to the Bhaal temple as a young adult, his mind completely broken, having nothing and no one. Maeth felt like he had finaly found his purpose, found the place where he belonged to. That's why he ended up dedicating most of his life to Bhaal, his faith blinding him entirely and this false love he was receiving from Bhaal being the poison which had intoxicated his whole heart and mind for so long. He was desperately clinging onto it, for it was the only thing he ever had, the only form of love that was granted to him. And the only one he knew his urge could never take away from him.

So basically, Maeth had no luck in his life doomed to become the puppet of a vile God, being deeply anchored in that God's scheme who orchestrated his whole miserable life, ending up absolutely indoctrinated because his mind had been shaterred by the very God he will be adoring for most of his life.
