What’s interesting is the amount of think pieces this movie has generated in recent years with regards to how criminally underrated it is.

The director even commented on its underserved hate:
“Some films by women get a level of scrutiny that is sort of disproportionate to what’s in front of them, or what the reality is … Most of the men I’ve heard talk about the film mention … cringe-worthy and corny, and most of all bizarre. I have not yet spoken to a girl for whom [the relationship between Jennifer and Needy] did not resonate, didn’t hit something deep in them.”

TLDR: it actually was ahead of its time and likely would’ve been more respected if it were released in the present day.
Who do you suppose which parents of Bojack were the worst Butterscotch or Beatrice?
Butterscotch was probably just plain neglectful whereas Beatrice had that super toxic attitude.Â
Beatrice definitely was the cause for many of Bojack’s issues he deals with today.Â
Beatrice hit a fork in the road, and she chose the wrong path. I truly believe she would have been so much happier and better off had she married Corbin. Instead, she got stuck with Butterscotch’s bitter ass. After growing up with someone like Joseph as a father, Butterscotch killed any hope she had left. Beatrice didn’t start out toxic. Her soul was broken.
Butterscotch was still an ass, though. Sure, he swallowed his pride in order to make more money, but he basically blamed his misery on Bojack’s existence, much like how Beatrice did. He physically and verbally abused Bojack and neglected him often, but at least he didn’t do anything to mess up Bojack’s adult life the way Beatrice did.
Or maybe season 4 will show how Butterscotch treated Bojack during his career in TV. Honestly, after Beatrice’s mind completely went, I could see Bojack having flashbacks of his father.
I really like this thread. At the very least, both were just as bad for blaming their child who They brought into the world for their own problems. And I agree with the reblogs— Butterscotch was just as toxic as Beatrice, if not worse. For all of Beatrice’s failings, at least she didn’t disappear and have an affair the way Bojack’s father did. Whether it was because she did it out of caring for Bojack or not, it’s a fact that the only reason why she was more damaging to Bojack than Butterscotch was was because she was ultimately more present than Butterscotch. And it’s always easier to criticise someone who tries and fails than criticise someone who doesn’t try at all.
Relevant. The reason I majored in computer science.Â
