Just gonna add onto this and make it an intro post because I thought that would be fun!

Hey! I’m Raegan! (she/her)

- 23

- Currently and for the foreseeable future I post a lot about The Outsiders (I enjoy the book, movie and musical). Soda is my favorite but I love them all!

- I also really love Tex (book and movie) and MASH at the moment and I’ll always be a part of the Lockwood & Co. fandom🤞

- I spend most of my free time reading, watching movies and listening to music. I also write sometimes (ao3 is neufer)

Something about me is that I smoke twice a year, on my brother-in-law's birthday and death day. He was my best friend and the brother I never had, and he gave me my first cigarette. I was thinking about him recently, and my mind wandered to how Ponyboy Curtis first got his too-young hands on a cigarette.

It wouldn't have been from Darry, too protective, or Soda, too clean. Steve didn't talk to him much, and while Two-bit is a prankster, and might’ve, I doubt he was that dangerous about it.

That leaves Johnny and Dally.

I think Pony picked it up from Johnny who got them from Dally. In the movie Dallas wanted to hang out "like old times" at the drive-in. I think Dally and Johnny went to hang out, and Pony tagged along because he's a movie nerd, Johnny liked his company, and Dallas tolerated whatever kept Johnny even just a little bit happy.

So then, I picture Ponyboy Curtis a month past 15. He's made friends, grown into his bones a little more. He still smokes 'cause he's a proper addict, but he's cut down for his brother's sake's, and he's doing better in track because of it.

Tonight is different. He's the one who stays the longest. He can't believe it's been a year. He's out behind the church back home, standing at the foot of the two graves, lighting his first one. He sits down and starts talking, and keeps talking, telling his old best friends about all the life they've missed and before he realizes it he's blown through almost whole pack.

There's two left in the box, so he leans it up against a nearby tree.

"Saved you one Johnny. You too, Dally", he says, before turning around and walking home at sunrise.

I tried and failed not to balk. “So what if they play it a ton? It’s a good song, like you just said. It’s a great song, actually-” He laughed again. It was a kind laugh. “No, I’m kidding, Katie, I promise ya. You’re right. It’s great.” “Well, I think so.” My face was getting a little warm, but it kind of felt like when Evie poked fun at me. “It’s maybe a little sad, I guess, but still great.” “Yeah, I know what you mean. It’s kinda pretty, y’know?”

3. a character that fandom has helped you appreciate

Recently I think it's been Randy. I hadn't thought a lot about how much he impacts the story in the same way that Cherry does. And then I've also been appreciating the greaser girls more of course! All of them, but maybe more so Angela.

7. favorite tropes to read/write/draw

Idk if it's a trope exactly but slice of life! I just love little snapshots.

11. what fic or piece of art are you proud of making?

Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old). I wrote this fairly quickly, but it wasn't rushed and I feel like I accomplished all that I wanted to, like I didn't leave anything out, so that's why I'm proud of it.

16. tiny detail in canon that you want more people to appreciate

This is kinda just at the top of my mind, but the fact that Cherry and Marcia are barrel racers! I think that contrasts with their typical Soc image and gives them more depth. And it's just really cool. There are SO many good little details in The Outsiders though. That's something Hinton does very well so I think people should appreciate it more in general.

20. very first fandom

Honest to god I think it was The Outsiders. It was the first piece of media I read fanfiction for :) I got into a few more soon after.

24. how has fandom positively impacted your life?

Through the people!! Interacting with fellow fandom members is the best <3 And in addition to that, the two times I've gotten super deep into a fandom (Lockwood & Co and The Outsiders) were right after I graduated high school and as I was finishing college/post grad, and I truly do not think I would've made it through, or wouldn't be currently making it through, without that fandom.

Thinking more about #16. It's a small element, but I think The Outsiders is a good and interesting example of an intersection of “city” and “country.”

Yes, Cherry and Marcia are Soc girls who live on the nice, West side of town, but they’re still girls from Oklahoma and they barrel race! And their families have the money to invest in it quite a bit. Pony says they’re good, so I’d bet that they have.

It’s a similar thing with Dally and Soda, just without them having a lot of money to invest in it, of course. They’re greasers. Dally lived in New York where he blew off steam in gang fights. Soda drag races. They’re not typical cowboys, yet Dally rides in rodeos, and Soda used to and he used to have his horse, so the intersection is pretty present in them.

Mr. Curtis is even a farmer/rancher in Pony’s dream! “Since I was dreaming I brought Mom and Dad back to life... Mom could bake some more chocolate cakes and Dad would drive the pickup out early to feed the cattle.” This always makes me wonder about Mr. Curtis’ background, like if he came from a farm/ranch family.

(Pony isn’t totally sold on all things country, though, it seems. “[Buck Merril] dug Hank Williams— how gross can you get?” always makes me laugh.)

Like I said, all of these make up a small element of the story, but I think it adds to the realism of it all. That intersection is definitely something you would see in a place like Tulsa, like any big city in a more rural state like Oklahoma.

I know you are a big Patrick Swayze fan, have you ever read his book? It’s pretty good!

Yes I actually read it earlier this year! I really liked learning about his career as a dancer and how he then transitioned to acting. Definitely got me a little existential too since he was processing his cancer diagnosis.
