Knock at the cabin movie - what would you do?
Whether I believed the apocalypse is real or not, my answer would been the same - no I refuse to sacrifice myself or kill another willingly.
Reasons if the apocalypse is not real - straightforward, there is no beneficial outcome to anyone involved, so no.
Reasons if the apocalypse is real - 1) do these ultimate plagues affect just humanity, would the rest of the living planet be spared? If it doesn't, there's a moral argument the world better off collectively without the human race. There was a nice moment in the film where this was acknowledged, that parents have chosen themselves and their families over the future of the world over and over again since leading to the destruction of ourselves (climate crisis causing an uninhabitable planet and th sixth mass extinction). 2) why does the deity causing the apocalypse chose this tiny sample with huge responsibility as the final and ultimate test? Haven't humanity collectively already done enough it be judged? To force this decision and methodology seems cruel and lazy tbh. And doesn't the storyline undermine free will?! I don't respect a god like that. I will look him in the face and walk backwards into hell.
Either the apocalypse is not real and I get to live in a hellscape, or it is real and I get to live in a different hellscape. My answer (and outcome, e.g., life) is the same in both scenarios, the decision lies with the delusional people or the deity, whichever scenario is true.
The alt right WS pipeline doesn't exist because young white boys are bullied for being white boys it's because white people don't teach their children how to examine their biases in terms of race and gender and the second anyone tries to actualy address these issue they get accused of trying to make childrne feel bad for being white and male, no matter how kindly they explain privilege.
WS is about seeing white people as the victims, you aren't preventing it by furthering that idea

Of course I love how Benoit Blanc is so shamelessly, fabulously, himself. How he’s gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide [GNU Terry Pratchett], of course. How he doesn’t hide that his brain is peculiar, for better or for worse. How he picks the cases he likes.
But I also love that in Glass Onion Rian Johnson shows us that Blanc can choose to be himself because he’s protected by his privilege of rich, upper-class, white man.
Which in turn leads me to notice how in both movies Blanc uses his privilege to protect two working-class women of colour, but he always refuses to be their saviour. He just creates the conditions in which they can choose to be themselves and save themselves—and punish their oppressors.
Let's write Goncharov.
I'm not joking. I think the best way to absolutely relish in a joke is to push it as far as you can, and in this case that means "write a screenplay based off a movie that doesn't exist by an Italian-licenseplate screenwriter".
So let's write it.
My credentials - I'm a professional screenwriter and playwright with a handful of decent credits. I also am about to have a lot of time on my hands. However, I am not as familiar with Scorsese/crime film-flavoured writing as I would like.
That's where you come in.
Have some free time? Want to bang out a 3.5 hour long screenplay in the next few weeks from a set of hazily constructed plot points, homoerotic scene paintings and shitposts, shaping this concept into something that is simultaneously real and not real?
I absolutely do.
Hit me up if you're interested. If I get enough interest we can make this nonsense a reality. I anticipate it being a decently fast write - gotta stay on top of the popular thing, so just fyi.
I don't want a romantic partner I want friends who will go dumpster diving with me, I want neighbors who will knock on my door and ask for butter because they forgot to buy some and it's sunday. I want book shelves in public spaces, food banks and shared tool sheds and community gardens. I want to trade home grown tomatoes for a couple of eggs with my neighbor and I want to bring food over to my friends house when I've cooked too much. I want bicycle only streets and I want people to go on spontaneous walks with. I want people to ask me for help when they need it and I want to be able to ask for help in return. I want community as a safety net. I want people to stop focusing on the vague concept of the one, who will Cure All Isolation and Loneliness. I want every single person to be able to find support and comfort around them, regardless of their relationship status.
squid game is an purposeful critique on the consequences of capitalism and explores the desperate measures those living under it will take. to say that it was simply "their choice" to return is... deliberately missing the point :/
IN THIS ESSAY I WILL—
sometimes depression is so scary because you stop being able to achieve any sense of fulfilment. a huge part of being human is looking forward to things and having treats, goals, rewards, outcomes that you strive towards. if you don’t have those things it can be really, really hard to find any sense of purpose. having depression is asking yourself what do i want to eat, what do i want to watch, what do i want to play, what do i want to listen to, what do i want to do, what am i looking forward to, what’s driving me to keep going, and having the answer be a resounding ‘nothing’
And when she looked in the mirror, she saw two women: the one who survived and the one who couldn't escape the flood of her own heart.
