This simple challenge is for anyone who is trying to learn a language. Every day of November, try to write a sentence or small paragraph containing all of the words for that day! You may conjugate all you want, you may use several more nouns/verbs/adjectives, as long as the prompted words are there and recognizable.

Post to tumblr or write for yourself! And don’t forget to tag with your language and #NVA November, so that others may help and correct you, and so we can see if it’s possible to make weirder sentences than Duolingo.

I think I’ve said time and again that I live in the middle of nowhere.

I also must add that I’m not the most perceptive person.

I’ve been running some three times a week through the same streets since July. Only today did I notice that one of the houses on the street behind the one I run on had a sign in a language that looked like Irish, but I couldn’t know for sure.

But, yes, I’ve checked and it says “welcome” in Irish and I love it and I wished I could speak the bare minimum of Irish to say hi to the people who live there.

We’re in that time of the year again. German exam is in a couple of weeks and, with a very heavy heart, I have to stop learning Swedish to concentrate in German.

The good news is that if I pass, I’ll get a diploma equivalent to a B2 and will be done with the language school. It’s been a rough year having to drive so much to get to school and, on top of that, I don’t think I’ve advanced as much as I did previous years (in a closer school, but they didn’t offer the last level there).

Also, I plan to boost my Swedish during the summer. I think I’m done with duolingo and it’s been difficult for me to keep up with the gold lists I made, so I’ll pass the vocabulary to anki. It’s so much easier for me to take the phone and review 20 cards than having to take the notebook, write and notice I barely remember one or two words.

My second goal for the summer is to learn the meaning of the roughly 500 kanji from the joyo kanji that I still don’t know so I can read faster than a couple of pages per day.

I’ve not been writing here mostly because I’m very frustrated with German, but I hope after the exam I can think of things to share.

For any of your followers learning swedish; you should check out historieätarna and svenska dialektmysterier. Both are available on youtube. They're both documentary style tv series. First one is about two people eating their way through history, and the other talks about different swedish accents and their history

How many of you were raised monolingual and later learnt languages? At what age did you learn your second language? I read that many of you were taught a foreign language at a young age and I admit I’m a bit jealous!

I was raised speaking only Spanish and they didn’t teach us English in school until I was about 11/12 years old (though I didn’t really learn English until I was at least 15). It’s never too late to start learning languages, though!
