jackie and shauna's relationship has been marinading in my brain and would not let me rest until this zine happened. this project was done traditionally in watercolor with handwritten text (transcripts available in the image descriptions!)
you can see the behind-the-scenes, download the digital zine, and support my art on ko-fi! endless thanks to everyone who helped make this zine happen ❤️

there is so much dissonance between how some people claim tumblr is one of the last vestiges of early social media and non algorithm-driven fandom and how they actually engage with fandom content on here
i saw a post earlier talking about how artists need to stop guilt tripping people for reblogs because a like should be good enough, and while i’m strongly against guilt tripping of any kind, if fandom creators can’t get any exposure, feedback, engagement, and interaction on here, how do you think fandom will work??
when you take the collaboration and reciprocity out of fandom by limiting the interactions, feedback, inspiration, and even possible connections that its creators get from exposure, you end up not only with a one-sided relationship where creators make free fandom content that’s just consumed and moved on from, but you also get a dying website with less and less content because creators follow feedback and community.
you can’t have a reciprocal relationship where people make amazing works for you to enjoy without giving them something in return, whether it’s your feedback/ideas/compliments in the tags, an ask engaging deeper with their content, or exposure via reblog to give more people a chance to discover their stuff and engage with it. likes are fantastic too and i think most people genuinely appreciate them, but they’re about the bare minimum of what you can do to engage with content online, and it’s fine if sometimes that’s the most you can do, but it becomes a problem when all of the fandom interactions that used to foster creativity and excitement to create more stuff are replaced by only likes.
no one is owed exposure or engagement, so i think we need to reframe this conversation to remove guilt and replace it with encouragement to build fandom and community again. if we want fandom that’s not driven by algorithm, then we have to put in the work of forming a community where everyone has something to contribute, whether it’s content in the shape of a fic, art, meta, gifsets, or feedback such as compliments, additional ideas, discussion, and attention.
