wanegbt is on par with blank space in terms of songwriting intelligence and parody but y'all aren't ready for that conversation
I mean think about it's position in her album/discography at that point. it's bright, unapologetic, bubblegum pop putting forward ONE solitary message of WE ARE NEVER GETTING BACK TOGETHER. in an album that shows us she's perfectly capable of exploring the complexities of heartbreak we get this one song thats SO different to her usual sound, SO purposefully pop-py, SO overly done and that lets itself be defined by a single unbelievably catchy hook... a song Taylor herself said she wrote bc she knew it would play on the radio and drive the person she wrote it about crazy because of how perfectly pop-py it was bc "it's the opposite of the kind of music that he was trying to make me feel inferior to"....
Like it's a parody of itself. it's a parody of all breakup songs. it's bitter, it's zingy, it's focused, it uses all the tropes of 2000s breakup songs including an almost valleygirl-esque spoken word bridge, has a PURPOSEFUL one dimensional feel, and plays so much into this idea that it feels ironic. and it gets dismissed as like this generic pop song but it's Not!! it's intentional pop! it's "bubblegum" sound IS part of the message!! it's direct defiance of That Person!! just like blank space plays with the idea of the 'boy crazy' girl, wanegbt plays with the idea of breakup songs but in the form of classic, catchy, almost camp pop AND is still relatable because it's infused with genuine emotion/frustration from the relationship. and it managed to become THE universal defining breakup song. at a time where being 'the girl who wrote angry breakup songs' was central to her public identity, almost making all this a parody of herself....
it's literally delicious classic witty pop intelligence but some of you can't recognise genius
