CHARACTER BIOGRAPHY:
TW PARENTAL DEATH AND EXTREMELY VAGUE MENTIONS OF ABUSE.
Charlie grew up in Metropolis to a single mother and was a huge fan of Batman - particularly Barbara Gordon's Batgirl.
She has a hard upbringing: growing up in poverty with a an overworked, overwhelmed, and overly cynical mother who tried her damnedest to put food on the table. It never seemed to be enough.
of course, the superpowers didn't help. Charlie can teleport anywhere - and that means anywhere, without alerting even the most sophisticated technological systems on Earth (including Batman). To make things worse, she has an enhanced healing ability and enhanced strength…. not exactly prime child raising abiltiiy, especially when Charlie puts Hyperactive in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
As she got a little older, Charlie learned to not really use her powers because they made her mom nervous.
When Charlie was about 14, her mom met a guy. He was a great guy…. until he wasn't. After he was long gone (in an incident that might have lead to Charlie breaking his nose), her mother gave birth to her baby brother, Aidan.
This is a superhero character, after all, so here is the tragic backstory.
Almost a year after Aidan was born, Charlie's landlord paid a local gang to torch their apartment for insurance money. The building wasn't up code, and 17 people died, including Charlie's mother and brother. Charlie only escaped because her mother woke her up and made her teleport out.
Charlie started operating as "Batgirl" in a bad, homemade batgirl costume (t shirt, jeans, homemade cape, etc) and quickly got chewed out by the Birds of Prey.
Which, hilariously enough, she had been STALKING so she knew their identity. Oracle's motion censors couldn't pick up her bouncing in, and… well. :) She had a small tift with Barbara, who gave her a batgirl plushie…. and the bullet lodged in Barbara's spine while also showing her Stephanie Brown's autopsy photos to convince her to stop being Batgirl. Which she did! But then she started operating as Misfit.
She lived on the streets, was in and out of shelters (and Oracle's gigantic HQ), but after worming her way into a little too many Bird of Prey missions and driving everyone insane for a (now 15 year old) Barbara finally found out her identity and living situation (which Charlie had been lying about consistently. favorites were she was super rich and had a movie star pair of parents)
Charlie was Barbara's ward for two years. They wanted to kill each other, but ended up developing a complicated sisterly bond, which also included the rest of the Birds of Prey. Barbara and Charlie constantly clashed over being a superhero, and Barbara put Charlie through hellish training trying to get her to quit… and, well, Charlie's listening skills needed work. Oh, and Barbara forced her to go to school. Ew.
And then the unthinkable happened. In October 2019 (when she was 17), the Joker broke into the clock tower. Him and Barbara battled, with Barbara largely winning until she's thrown down some stairs.
Charlie returns home, and… well. Charlie can bring anything with her that doesn't have a soul. Any living thing? Turns into meat confetti. And Charlie panicked. The Joker dies as a result of Charlie teleporting with him.
This lead to friction between Barbara and Charlie, and even worse, a campaign to put Charlie into a place like Arkham by Batman. The explanation was she's dangerous, both in abilities and general reasoning skills.
Charlie flees Gotham, and… well. Hi Jason. :)
Jason Todd practically picks her up by the scruff of her neck, finding her in an abandoned warehouse, and joins the Outlaws. She does, unfortunately, get her GED, and Jason continues Charlie's training in secret.
At some point, Charlie reconnects with Helena Bertinelli (Huntress) and receives training from her too.
Barbara and Charlie are estranged. On Charlie's side, she still feels guilt and shame over what happened. Fine get her wrong, she's GLAD the Joker is dead, but she feels like it wasn't her call to make. She's also ashamed she reacted without thinking because she was scared.
Charlie also carries trauma from …. well, killing someone/feeling them die
She lives with Jason in Castle Point. At this point she does have her own place……. right across the hall from Jason.
She works a day job waitress, and her night job is a navy blue wearing hero named Exile. She is considering college.
While her abilities appear to be metahuman based, they are from a homomagi origin, and she has the ability to learn spells. This happened after an unfortunate encounter with Granny and a Suoerhero fighting ring where she got kidnapped.
She calls her teleporting "bouncing." It could be seen as a more streamlined version of Dr. Strange's Portaling, without the portal.
Her powers don't work as well when she's exhausted/not taking care of herself (food, water, sleep, mentally, etc ). She had some serious issues after Joker's death that she had to work through.
