Review: Pliny the Elder (Tap)

I walked into the Tornado Pub in San Francisco, heavy metal music blasting, pretty dead considering it was a week night; kind of a shitty little dive bar. I look up at the wall of taps available and most of the slots were empty, making me think the place had seen some rough times as of late. Then I saw it, right under Russian River, and above Damnation: Pliny the Elder. On tap and ready for order. And instantly my feeling transformed entirely, and I loved that little pub more than anything in the world. Now for those of you who live in Cali you may think “a little Pliny big whup,” but for those of you on the east coast or mid-west you realize that Pliny is no ordenary beer. Whether you see it on tumblr, or ratebeers top 10 (or beer advocate for that matter) Pliny the Elder has become a bit of a legend for those of us who can’t just waltz into a corner liquor store and pick up a couple 500 mL’s. So the question remains: is it as good as the hype?

The bartender poured Pliny into a pint glass with very little head and some lacing hugging the rim of the glass. I pulled it to my nose, and the aroma is simply fucking amazing. Hops like a mofo, and enough pine, resin, and citrus to think you were in a damn forest. This is the best smelling beer I have encountered yet.

Now onto the first sip: huge pine, grapefruit, earthy, wet, refreshing, and slightly sticky hops shoot onto the palate. And immediately the thought that enters my mind is that this is what an IPA should taste like. There’s a bit of a malt backbone and the balance is perfect, but more importantly it’s the freshest, cleanest, and most pristine beer I’ve ever had. Pliny does not redefine a genre, it defines it. It does not add crazy complexity and depth to a stout, or Belgian ale like previous perfect scores. Instead it simply executes a style to perfection to the point where I can sit and say: you wanna know what an IPA is? Taste Pliny. With that said your appreciation of this beer will lie entirely with your appreciation for IPAs. If your a malt guy, or a stout guy, and that is your favorite, then Pliny won’t change your mind, but may open you up to a new kind of ale. For me, Pliny the Elder is the new standard for all future IPAs to be compared to.
