The suburb of Newlands encompasses multi-functional areas compassing residential, commercial, educational and recreational areas, all steeped in rich history. Flashback: A brief history of Newlands

Newlands, in the time of Jan van Riebeeck, was already considered a desirable place. Originally laid out by Willem Adriaan van der Stel, the Nieweland estate was established in 1700. The iconic Newlands House was subsequently built one year later by Governor Ryk Tulbagh, which lays a short distance from Rustenburg on the slopes of Devil’s Peak with Kirstenbosch as its other boundary. The original property encompassed a formal garden with a plantation of majestic oaks, where it remained the property of the government until 1826, after which the village of Newlands was developed.

During the 1860’s, this verdant suburb was favourably known as a fashionable area for wealthy merchants to escape the clinging confines of the city and recuperate and relax in their country homes situated in the relaxing suburb of Newlands.

This land was initially given to the first nine citizens of “Free Burghers” of South Africa and was later subdivided once it was relinquished by Government sale. The Newlands House remained a sought-after residence and became the hosting residence for Cape Governors such as Sir Lord Charles Somerset. The house can still be seen today, with its distinctive wooden gates set back from Newlands Avenue.
