Past presidents of the NC Press Association gathered at this year’s Winter Institute to talk about the past and future of the association. Each past president took home a bowl from a North Carolina potter inscribed with the number 30. The original writers, telegraphers or news folks who used -30- at the end of their stories would surely be baffled by the idea of Instagram, and they may be shocked to find out that many newspapers use social media to connect with their readers. There are a variety of theories about where the use of “30” came from. It may have been the cue for the typesetter to insert a 30-point slugline space between the end of one story and the beginning of the next headline. Another theory says that the first message sent to a press association in the U.S. had 30 words, so its sender indicated this with the number 30 at the end and it just stuck for future news stories.
