I’ve been a fan of Campa since 2008 when he was just one half of a small town duo that authored Technohop Vol. 1 & 2 - Berkeley High’s very own The Cataracs. Although they accumulated a substantial hometown fan base that categorized them as “Bay Area famous”, it was dope to see my favorite local artist make it big -- garnering national and international recognition. At the peak of their career as The Cataracs, the duo produced Platinum hits that dominated radio waves (with collaborations with their signed artist DEV). However, in August of 2012, my heart shattered at the news of David (aka Campa) leaving The Cataracs, which would go on as Niles’ (aka Cyrano) solo act. As a day one fan who saw one of their earliest live shows at Slim’s in San Francisco in 2009, the prospect of never hearing music from Campa, as an essential part of The Cataracs as I knew them, was beyond disheartening. However, the release of his new music as a solo artist continues to clearly reflect his undying unique style that is surely different from the rest. So don’t sleep on Campa - listen to his new collab with Ashley All Day, Over My Head.

In love with You Don’t Own Me by GRACE featuring G-Eazy for the empowering feminism coupled with her exquisitely impassioned vocals that effectively convinces of the impenetrable resilience of womyn in spite of man.
“Don’t tell me what to do and don’t tell me what to say. Please, when I go out with you, don’t put me on display. You don’t own me.”

Straight out of Compton, the roar of Kendrick Lamar’s newest album proves that his work is truly above the rest - by releasing the most necessary and important album in mainstream hip hop. While every track on here further reaffirms that Kendrick refuses to comply with the underwhelming standard that the industry has set, as both a student in DC and a California native, I appreciate the entire album for addressing the larger issues of civil rights - a fight that is relevant from coast to coast - that are deeply rooted in the nation’s capital. Not only does the album ingeniously incorporate notes of jazz, soul, and other music influences that successfully continues the motif of the history of African American music culture and a nod to the Black Broadway of Washington, DC, every single lyric preaches a truth that has been largely absent from mainstream hip hop for a long time. To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar - hitting the heart of what hip hop is all about. So thank you, Kendrick. You just reminded me why I fell in love with hip hop.
