Coexistence of Nature and Humanity
Coexistence of Harsh Realities and Tenacity
This road was built on a seabed uplifted by the earthquake.
The original road was devastated, and it was decided that rebuilding it would take far too long.
Living in harmony with nature isn’t just an ideal.
Coming here makes me feel closer to nature than wearing an organic cotton shirt ever could.

Where the Old and Everyday Coexist
In Japan’s Noto Peninsula, rows of traditional houses from the old days still remain.
There is more of old Japan beyond Kyoto.

A Small Fishing Boat on an Almost Overflowing Sea
During the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, a tsunami destroyed several houses.
Yet the sea remains closely tied to the lives of the residents, and despite higher tides caused by land subsidence, many of those whose homes were not destroyed continue to live here.

Enduring
This bridge was damaged in the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, yet it still withstands the passage of buses and dump trucks.
Because it endures, repairs have been given a lower priority.

I visited the Noto Peninsula, which suffered devastating damage in the earthquake of January 2024.
Despite being a place with difficult access, I saw people steadily and earnestly moving forward toward recovery.
The Noto Peninsula still holds the harsh realities of the coexistence between nature and people.
It also still holds the beauty of that coexistence.

This road was built on a section of seabed uplifted by the earthquake.
Every part of the road shown in the photo above runs across land that was once under the sea.
It was built this way because restoring life for local residents could be done more quickly than repairing the original road.
Dōsojin
A Wayside Guardian, Quietly Watching Over Everyday Life
Dōsojin are guardian deities that became common in some rural regions of Japan around 300 years ago. Though not directly tied to any formal religion, they reflect a humble, nature-rooted form of spiritual belief unique to the countryside.
