Immigrant Interview

The immigrant interviewed was my sister’s girlfriend’s mom.

She came to America from Vietnam. She came to America when she was young with her siblings on a boat. When they got her she moved to California and lived with her uncle. Some of Her parents pulls for her and her siblings to come to America were because the education is better and work when they get older. They also wanted them to take advantage of living in America. A push form Vietnam was that the women in Vietnam couldn't work they could only stay home and have children, clean and cook but in America it is easier for a women to be successful; Lastly the second generation children are expected to do better and her parents thought they could do that better in America. Since her parents got them to America they are expected to work extra hard and so are their children.

The ingredients in a milky way are Sugar, Glucose Syrup (Sources include Wheat), Milk Solids, Vegetable Fat, Cocoa Butter, Cocoa Mass, Barley Malt Extract, Cocoa Powder, Egg White, Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin), Salt , Natural Flavor (Vanilla Extract). The Milky way originated from the UK but is known as a Mars bar. When it came to the US 1923 Americans added caramel to it and called it the Milky Way, because it was supposed to be like a milk shake in a chocolate bar. The cocoa used in Mars chocolate bars all come from West African cocoa farms. These farms are Fair Trade-certified farms. Which means they work with companies who also believe an fair trade and equality of farmers. By 2020 Mars is committed to only using certified sustainable sources to get cocoa from and they are going to help cocoa farmers improve their profits, yield, and processes. Mars supply chain mangers have been traveling miles around villages in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire making videos and writing documents and meeting with many different people from these places (from the government to farmers and village leaders) finding ways they can help improve the labor conditions there and if it is helping or hurting them. Most people they talked to have said that labor conditions have improved since Mars has arrived. Mars is also working with The International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) in Africa to help improve these conditions.

When it comes to income inequality, even the top 1 percent of earners in the U.S. stack up unevenly, according to a new report by the Economic Policy Institute. Here's what you need to make to crack the top 1 percent in your state.

In this article titled “What it takes to be in the top 1 percent of your state” It talks about what you would have to do to make it in the world's top 1% of the economy and it also talks about income inequality. In the article it goes into detail about how much money you would need to make and how much people in the top 1% of certain states are making or will have to make. It also takes about what the minimum income of someone in the top 1% in the U.S is, which is $421,926. In the article it also looked in detail at New York’s income inequality. It talked about how it is the most unequal state in the nation, with the top 1% making on average $2.2 million and the other 99% making on average $49,617; Meaning the top 1% is making about 44 times more than the other 99%.

How does this relate to the theories; This article related mostly to Marxist theory. His theory looked at the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. Marx theory said that the bourgeoisie own the means of production and the proletariat are the laborers and only own their means of production. The article talks about the top 1% which would be the bourgeoisie. These are the people who own mass production which is causing them the be top 1% because they are making the most money in the economy making them able to control it. The proletariat are the other 99% of people in the nation which are normally the people working for others. The bourgeoisie are normally the bosses or the owner of the company, and the proletariat are normally the employees.

Here is my kindship diagram. In this diagram I showed my cousins, brother, sisters, parents, aunts and uncles, and my grandparents. Another thing I showed was other people outside my family who had children with people in my family. Somethings I noticed was first is that a lot of people in my family had children with someone they didn't get married to. Another thing I noticed is that I have a lot of cousins and some that I don't even know about (hint the question marks). Where I have the question marks are the aunts that I don't really know about or never meet children. Both my mom and dad have a long lost sister. I’ve meet my dads sister at my grandfathers funeral in 2015. My mom’s long lost sister I've never meet; She lives in South Carolina. I might have meet her when my grandfather passed away but I don't remember because I was only about 6 when he passed. The last thing I noticed is everyone in my family had kids before they were married and then got married to that person or to someone else's.

Fieldwork assignment

I really liked this exhibit. I liked how it looked at different lives of black people from Germany. I also liked how it talked about the African diaspora in Germany that we dont usually hear or know about. By not knowing this, this could cause people to think that there there arent other ethnicities there. In Germany assimilation was very much seen, which made the black people living there come togthere and create their own communities which made them become very close to one another. These communities had many ethnic boundary markers.

Olumide Popoola was born in Neuss which is in Germany. She then moved to Nigeria then returned back to Germany. In 1999 she moved to South Africa for a few months. Now she lives and works in London. She is a ayurvedic practitioner. She talks about how Germany doesn't have a multicultural norm and she also said Nigeria doesnt either which was interesting to me.

This song relates to the exhibit because the blacks communities in Germany where so closed they looked at eachother as family (which this song is about ( everyone coming togthere as a family) ). The people from these communities made things like books so the world can see and learn about them and who they are.

Here is a documentary I found on youtube about being black in germany. This documentary looks at what its like being Afro-german. This documentary was really interesting and I think everyone should watch it.

This picture is showing different races and stereotypes that you might hear about when people are talking about that specific race.

This picture has to do with race because it is shows that we are all the same just because we have different skin colors doesnt make us ugly or different wr are all beautiful no matter the color of your skin.

This picture shows all the characteristics that people associated or think of when it comes to black men and black people in general.

In this picture two black men are making fun of another black man because he graduated. Saying that he is white and sold out because he didnt follow them and and that he has to be white because only white people graduate.

This is another picture regarding to racial stereotypes. In this picture it is showing the stereotypes we put on asians saying that they cant see because their eyes are smaller then white peoples eyes.

This picture is showing diversity. It is showing that even though the outside of the eggs are two different colors their insides are the exact same, just like us even though we might look different on the outside we are all the same on the inside.

In the film, it talks about Dave’s genetic lineage. It talked about where his

DNA traces back to. Dave’s DNA showed that his ancestors started in Africa

then traveled to the middle east than from there they migrated to central Asia.

While they were there the grasslands in central Asia went through an ice age-

induced dry spell causing them to then migrate left toward Europe. Then they

asked the question of if he is European why is his skin dark. Then they talked

about this could have happened sometime during slavery on of his ancestors

were probably a slave owner in Europe and had children with one of there

slaves and that's where there his skin color comes from.

To me, Dave’s story argues for the Out Of Africa Theory. The Out Of Africa

Theory is that everyone came from Africa and everyone DNA traces back to the

scientific Adam and scientific Eve. When the film talks about the path Dave ’s

ancestors took to get to Europe I think is where the film argued that everyone

started in Africa. His ancestors started in Africa and moved to central Asia and

when the land got difficult to live on and became different than how they were

used to living in Africa they migrated left and landed in Europe and settled.

Field work Assignment #3

The location I choose for my fieldwork project was the sitting area in Morgan View. I was drawn to this area because this is my first year living in Morgan view and my bed room window is facing this area. It looked very peaceful and relaxing and I’ve seen many people sitting out there before. I noticed that a lot of people walk through and sit in this area then I thought would. I also noticed that a lot of people walk to campus; while sitting here you can see the back gate and see the amount of people that use it to come back and forth from campus. The last thing I noticed while sitting here was that many people come in and out of the leasing office then I expected. A lot of people go to the gym and the store inside the leasing office.

What is it and what is it made of?

This is a pitcher. A pitcher is a container made to hold liquids such as juice and water. This is made of plastic. This pitcher was made by the company Sterilite. Sterilite was founded in 1939.

Where is this product made and who makes it?

This is made in the US in Townsend Massachusetts. Since 1968 Sterilite has opened more factors in Birmingham, Alabama, Lake Havasu City, Arizona, Massillon, Ohio, Clinton, South Carolina, Ennis, and Texas. All products are manufactured by factory workers.

What are the local impacts of the product?

If your position wasn’t high in the factories your pay would be low. Workers had long hours and on there feet for up to 12 hours. Working conditions where good only if you did exactly what you where told.

How is this disposed and What are the real environmental cost of producing this product?

Sterilite plastics containers like this one are manufactured without certain chemicals to help lessen the amount of pollution the factors are giving out. These containers cant be recycled they have to put into the garbage because they’re made of different plastics than things that we normal recycle, like water bottles and laundry detergent bottles.

Introduction

Hi my name is Nia Page. I’m a sophomore, I am a sociology major and receiving a minor in criminal justice. In the future I want to work in the FBI focusing on drug abuse and drug trafficking. When I first came to Morgan I was a computer science major but after taking some of the class realized that wasn't what I wanted to do with my life it was what my parents wanted me to do.
