McCree had always thought of himself as something of an expert at reading and remembering people. Perhaps it was the atmosphere, or the pretty face in front of him, or hell, maybe he was just getting plain old rusty. But something about the woman before him struck him as familiar, despite that he couldnât say where from. He figured for sure heâd recall meeting a woman like her. His first observations were that something about her was distinctly catlikeâ whether it be the grace with which she moved, or the confidence exuding from her posture and demeanour, or maybe her sly indifference when she plucked his drink away as if it had belonged to her all along.
And not to mention that voice. Hitting his ears as soft as silk, it was such a sharp contrast to the thumping bass and bright lights that surrounded her. No, a woman like that belonged on the stage of a high-end bar, singing sweetly and charming the audience to her every beck and call with movements as smooth as the jazz that played. Something was familiar about all this. Not a single soul could forget a woman like her, and heâd certainly met his fair shareâ she was dangerous. But had his scrutinizing look that accompanied this realization shown at all on his face, it was quickly replaced again by a trademark lackadaisical smile.
âWell now, consider me charmed. And here Iâm usually the one sweepinâ folks off their feet.â He chuckled, not leaning away or looking away in the slightest when Nicolette moved closer to reach past him. â Bold â was certainly the best description for her behaviour, alright. He twisted around to grab his second drink from the bar, his eyes only leaving herâs for a brief moment, and when McCree spoke again it was with the glass raised close to his lips. âWouldnât y'know it, Iâm lookinâ for a gal. Got my suspicions thatâs sheâs a real pretty li'l thing. Not unlike yourself, darlinâ.â Was that a wink? Perhaps it was, but it lasted for only a split second before he tipped his head back to take a swig of his drink.
âMaybe sheâs shy, but for the life'a me I couldnât get a name outta her. All sheâd say was for me tâ find her here. Y'wouldnât happen to know anythinâ about that, would you? Seems an awful strange place tâ meet a fella you hardly know. Unless, of course, y'know the place better.â Did he have enough evidence against her to be pressing her like this? Of course not. But just call it a hunch.
â Well, that sounds like quite the PREDICAMENT youâre in. I give
you my deepest sympathies for your plight. â
Sounding far from EMPATHETIC, Nicolette leaned casually against the bar, eyes never once straying from his as a hand lifted and motioned once to the boy behind the counter. He seemed to understand, quickly preparing a drink. She waited with all the patience of a predator stalking its prey, gaze intense yet amused as it silently challenged her companion to question her poor facade. She knew he wouldnât, just as he knew she wouldnât give up her carefully fabricated act of innocence so easily.
What would be the FUN in that?
There was nothing she loved more than a good GAME between unlikely opponents, and it was so rare to meet someone who could match wits with her as easily as he seemed to. Both of them were holding a full hand, neither intending to fold anytime soon. It was impossible to decipher the meaning behind their respective poker faces, but thatâs what made things so EXCITING. She wondered just how much more heâd allow her to raise the stakes before calling her bluff. Frankly he seemed just as content playing his role of ignorance, but heâd come all the way here just to find her, hadnât he? Just the thought of being caught in the act sent a shiver of anticipation down her spine.
â Oh, well Iâm sure sheâd LOVE to hear that from you directly.
something tells me she enjoys being admired. â
As endearments continued to filter into the air between them, she shivered and lifted the glass sheâd been handed to her lips, grinning behind it. He really knew how to play his cards right, she had to admit. That drawl of his voice, as sweet and smooth as HONEY, made her a little weak in the knees. If she werenât so stubborn, she wouldâve fallen victim to the copious amounts of charm he so effortlessly exuded from his person by now. Lucky for him ( and he certainly WAS lucky, to be on the receiving end of her attention ) besting her would prove a little more difficult than whispering a few sweet nothings into her ear.
â Shy? What an interesting assessment. Is that the kinda girl youâre
into, Handsome? A shy little butterfly? An innocent flower? Maybe
you misunderstood your mystery mistress. You wonât find anyone
like that here, sweetheart. But... â
Pausing as if to CONSIDER her next words carefully, she once again invaded his space, dragging a manicured nail just barely down his chest, tone casual and INVITING.
â Maybe I can help you out, IF you ask NICELY~ â
