“Way to make a girl feel special, ey?” Ainsley replied as Nicholas explained his reasoning for her paying for her drink. She wasn’t normally one to get upset easily, but she hadn’t appreciated feeling like some sort of second choice. “Feel free to disregard my advice, but perhaps next time take someone you actually want to spend time with.”

“Always.” Nicholas responded with a grin. “Didn’t say I didn’t want to spend time with you now did I though.” He pointed out a moment later, looking at the girl. “Did I just get to you Ains?”

“Quite frankly I’m relieved I didn’t task you with cracking eggs,” she admitted, watching Nicholas struggle with the flour. “Have you never baked before?”

“I mean... It’s not my every day task that I get up to.” He admitted, rubbing his nose on the sleeve of his shirt. “Rarely in fact.” He’d only really tried a couple of times.

An arm draped around his friends shoulders as Nicholas flopped onto the bed next to the girl. “Realise that if I fall asleep there is nothing in this god given world that will wake me up so you will end up putting up with me all night.”

“He looks like you.” Nic commented as he held up the small creature, making a small sad face as he ruffled the matted fur. “Poor little guy. A stray and your doppleganger. Oh the misfortune!”

“Reading up on Politics. Doing my essay.” He shrugged his shoulders. “Right now though it is the last thing I want to be doing.”

“If that’s the case then why are you asking me to get you in there?” Mal asked the other with a confused expression on her face. “Honestly? I don’t know, I’m still getting the hang of this whole royalty business, it’s different to walk into it then to be born into it.” She sighed, because sometimes it was a lot of pressure but she needed to remember that without her the barrier would still be up, it was important for her to be stood where she was and she was very fortunate. Or at least that was the mantra she told herself every morning. “Nic- well, good to meet you Nic. I’m Mal, but I’m guessing you already knew that.”

“Because your way is politer.” He explained with a roguish grin on his lips. “You’ll get there. Things like that can be learned. Formalities. What to say. What to do. It’s the heart for it you have to have. At least according to my Mom. She quotes my great grandmother all the time.” In some ways he heard so much about her he wished he knew her. Well... he had but not in anyway he could really remember much. “Yeah... I know your name but it’s good to meet you in person.”

“It’s a talent, that’s for sure,” Billie rode off of his sarcasm with a little sigh. “I didn’t realize you’d be willing to put in the effort for me if I asked,” she admitted with a little raise of her brow. “But I’m also not surprised you were quick to retract the offer. I’ll be fine. I’m always fine.”

“If I wasn’t willing to put in a little effort I would have turned you down.” He thought that was obvious. “But I offered. And I’m bored which are two reasons why I would have a go.” He hummed a little at that. “Fine... that’s like... the favorite word of everyone who is anything but fine.” He admitted with a chuckle.

“You make it sound like I’m able to just walk in and out of the royal buildings as I please.” Mal commented, looking to the other. “Plus we don’t exactly know one another, I don’t think I could even call you by your name.”

“I mean... technically I can.” A gift afforded to him by his father though he couldn’t say it was necessarily one the royal family would appreciate. He had learned slight of hand, how to move in and out like a shadow and how to con people where necessary. He wasn’t quite as fond of that as his father though. “So how does it work for you then?” The dark haired male asked before smiling. “And if you wanted to know my name, all you had to do was ask.” He added with a grin. “It’s Nic by the way.”

“I would argue a monologue is like a mini-one woman show inside of a play,” Belinda told him with a look. When he sat down she let out a sigh, “Look I just– I really need to focus,” she replied when he teased her sarcastically. “It’s different working with actual actors. What kind of acting experience do you have?”

“I didn’t realise I needed to be so specific.” Nicholas responded, chuckling. “You’re good at knocking people down aren’t you. And I may not be a drama student but I can speak some lines for you. I can even put in effort if you wanted too. But clearly you think you are better of on your own so I’ll let you get on with it.”

“Not always,” Magnolia insisted. She kept quiet as he spoke, watching as he took another book. “Suggestions? Well depends on what you’re looking for. You like history, hmm? Well is there a certain period of history that interests you the most?”

“I’m a bit of an all rounder really.” Nic answered. “I’ve been reading up on Pax Romana most recently though. Honestly, hit me with anything. Gotta be more interesting than the things I ought to be doing.”
