No Ear-fects
These ghostly blobs are actually inner ear hair cells, stained with a fluorescent dye. Sound waves cause stereocilia, tiny hairs on these cells, to vibrate. A minute pore on the surface, called an ion channel, then lets in a wave of charged particles, starting a signal which passes along nerves to your brain where it gets interpreted. Precisely which gene codes for the pore has yet to be identified, but it could be valuable in studying hearing disorders. Researchers recently examined a group of channels, called the TRP channels, which looked like good candidates. The cells in the image are from a normal mouse (top) and from a mouse missing one of the TRP channels (below). Unfortunately, none of the TRP channels caused any difference in hearing ability. Although it takes time, this brings scientists closer to identifying the channel and studying what affects it.

Mouse Study Suggests Autism is Not Just a Disorder of the Brain
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have generally been though to be caused by deficits in brain development, but a mouse study from Harvard University, suggests that the disorder may also affect the peripheral nerves found throughout the limbs and digits.
The Harvard researchers found that aspects of ASD, including the perception of touch and the presence of anxiety and social abnormalities, are linked to defects in the parts of the nervous system that communicate sensory information to the brain.
“An underlying assumption has been that ASD is solely a disease of the brain, but we’ve found that may not always be the case,” said senior author David Ginty, the Edward R. and Anne G. Lefler Professor of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. “Advances in mouse genetics have made it possible for us to study genes linked to ASD by altering them only in certain types of nerve cells and studying the effects.”

Whole-exome Sequencing Aids in Testing Cancer Treatment
To aid researchers to better match patient tumors with their closest genetic cell line match, ensuring that the cancer cells grown in a dish and used to test treatment accurately represent human tumors, University of Colorado Cancer Center researchers used next-generation sequencing technologies to perform the most detailed DNA-based analysis to date of 25 commonly used bladder cancer cell lines.
“The idea is very simple but very important,” says Dan Theodorescu, MD, PhD, director of the CU Cancer Center. “With our sequencing and transcriptional data, we can figure out which of these cell lines most closely match the human tumors. Once we know which ones match, we should only use these in our experiments in order to have the best chance that our experimental findings then apply to patients and their tumors.”
The study, which was published in the journal Oncogene, used whole-exome sequencing to characterize genetic alterations that occur at the single nucleotide level for all genes in 25 cell lines commonly used as models of bladder cancer.

For MS Excel 2013 1. Open MS Excel. 2. Click the File tab, then Options. 3. Click Add-ins, then in “Manage”, choose Excel Add-ins then click go. 4. Select Analysis Toolpak, Analysis Toolpak - VBA, and Solver Add-in, then click ok.
For MS Excel 2010 1. Open MS Excel. 2. Click the Microsoft Office button, then Excel options. 3. Click Add-ins, then in “Manage”, choose Excel Add-ins then click go. 4. Select Analysis Toolpak, Analysis Toolpak - VBA, and Solver Add-in, then click ok.
To be able to use the function after installing it: 1. Click Data, then Data Analysis. 2. Choose the statistical tool na gagamitin mo, then click ok.
Yung nga lang, hindi ka makakapag-post hoc analysis, if necessary. But if you know how to do the post stat anal, then perhaps, pwede mo syang imanual via MS Excel. I did it para sa thesis ko last school year, and ok naman. :)
And yes, you can use other software like SPSS, Stata, SOFA Stat, GraphPad, and other softwares out there. :)
