My friend Elise is starting up a project called The Pegasus House, a non-profit, self sustainable cooperative home for LGBTQ youth of America. I think this is an amazing idea, but she needs volunteers.
The Basics
Forty percent of Homeless Youth identify as LGBTQ; with family rejection being the leading cause. In many shelters around the U.S., LGBTQ youth are abused physically and mentally by their peers.
I am reaching out for support to build a non-profit, self sustainable, cooperative home for homeless LGBTQ youth of America. At The Pegasus House, youth will have access to a multitude of natural and creative therapies, as well as the opportunity to learn alternative healing practices. The Pegasus House will offer education toward growing your own food, communal living, selfless service, yoga, meditation, and natural medicines. We will also offer employment training, addiction recovery, hormone therapy, STD/HIV testing, endless resources and education in that which interests the youth of the community.
What We Need
Contributors will help us create this space for homeless LGBTQ youth in multiple ways. As an organization, we will need a long list of items, but as for right now, we need to collect the building blocks. First, we need to get the word out, gain support, and plan out the details. Secondly, we will need land as well as eco-friendly, recycled materials to begin building our community.
Volunteers: In the early stages, The Pegasus House will be a volunteer-based operation. We will need a Farm Director, Art/Music/Movement Therapist, Yoga/Meditation Instructor, Grant Writer, Finance Director, Eco-Friendly Architect, Social Media Director, Medical Professional, Outreach Team, Seva Director, and more. Although many of these positions will not need to be filled until the community is up and running, I would love to have as many people as possible involved in the creation of The Pegasus House from it’s early stages. Once our community is in action, all staff will have the opportunity of on-site room and board, leading to monetary compensation when the organization has the resources to do so.
Financial: The Pegasus House needs a base. We need to begin saving up for the future expenses. Ideally, running on a volunteer and partial work exchange staff system, all proceeds will go to better the facilities and resources of the community; creating a more comfortable and fulfilling home for the youth.
Bottom Line
I have planted the The Pegasus House seed. Now I need help tending to it’s growth, watering the soil, offering the sunshine, and showing others. Please spread the word and let us create a safe and alternative living environment for homeless LGBTQ youth of America.
