PHANTOM BODIES FINAL

Dimensions: 3ft x 2ft

Medium: Plaster, wire, plastic bag, tape, and blanket fabric.

Throughout neighborhoods of Miami, one could find the parts of animals on the streets. This sculpture is the unsettling imagery of discarded animal parts used with human limbs. The only body part familiar to a human being are the feet sticking out from the opening of the bag. The display is hung by wire and is contrasted with the rough cuts shown on the feet. It looks like perhaps there is a body curled up in the bag but the size of the feet indicates that it belongs to someone much bigger. The monochrome palette keeps it from giving away too much as the contents of whats inside is wrapped in a white blanket prompting the audience to look closer for inspection.

1:1 Red

The color red proves to be the most difficult and the sculpture with the most fragile balance. The structure cannot stand on its own and is supported by the wall. I struggled to find objects of the color red and throughout the video the sculpture sits alone for quite some time as the clock hangs above. The red contrasts against the wall in a very harsh way as the materials used lean against it.

1-1 Yellow

The color yellow is the category for the materials used. The sculpture is given its height by the wicker furniture which are draped in a yellow knitted blanket. The objects are the most figurative out of all the primary color sculptures which included a stuffed bear, angel statue, and a Buddha statue. The triangle composition makes it seem like a shrine with the scattered lemon and alcohol. Yellow and its brightness gives an energy of life into the structure.

1:1 - Blue

The theme of the three videos is the gathering of objects within the household that respond to one of the three primary colors. I film myself building a sculpture with objects I see as I run out of frame into a structure of a concentrated primary color. All videos include the clock on the wall to understand that these objects exist within time as I struggle to match my height with a strict color palette. The first color is blue where out of three sculptures, it is the most structurally sound with the objects being easy to find throughout the video.

“Untitled” 

This project I repurposed the rebar into an extension of the body that is difficult to bear. The weight and irregular shape of the appendage rests on my body in an uncomfortable position. The outward shapes mimic the organic shapes one would find on an animal with wings or scales. The polyester sheer fabric stretches across the structure in the skin may do. The “skin” struggles to fully cover the appendage and cannot accommodate this new body part.
