the shoot with Rosie was much more successful, I feel like the general mood of what I wanted to achieve was more accomplished. In comparison to the photos of Kate, these feel less like a magazine editorial and more like a study of someone.
Favourites from the shoot with Rosie.
More successful shoot of Rosie (after the previous attempt with 120mm film)
35mm film, developed with c41 machine
- inhabiting spaces
For most of this project I have been using the darkrooms more as a means of printing my photographs and improving my skills in the darkroom. This is one of the prints I made the other day.
The photographs of Kate in her flat were successful in the way that they portray the idea of 'inhabiting a space'. I enjoy the general look and feel of them too, but there's something that doesn't sit quite right with me about them, I personally don't think there's any particular stand out images, and although they work as a body of work I'm not pleased with their lack of individual strength. That being said however, I enjoy reflections that are involved - I took a couple of portraits through a window and that adds quite an interesting aesthetic, something I might try emulate with further shoots.
Digital shoot with Kate A, Feb 2013
Roughly scanned photos of Lucy.
- inhabiting spaces
I shot a few photos of Lucy on the basis of the home environment - spaces that people inhabit and how they live in them.
3 final prints from the darkroom (test prints/contacts featured in support journal)
For this new project I decided I'd try shooting on 120 medium format film, and I borrowed my friends Mamiya camera to do so. I took a few photos of my friend in her room when I thought the light was alright, however the light meter isn't built in/working so I had to use an external one (an app on my iPhone) which didn't work as well as I'd hoped it would do. There were a few photos that could have been potentially ok once I had developed and attempted to scan them in, however the quality was just too bad when I tried to do anything with them. I'm including these negs in my support work journal, but I've had to write this mini-shoot off. I will reshoot these images at a later date though.
"Where They Create"
- inhabiting spaces
strengths
spending a lot of time looking at artist books/galleries/magazines etc
once i find inspiration/motivation, delve into my work
recently trying more things outside my comfort zone- experimenting
make a lot of lists through worrying about organising my ideas
weaknesses
lack of motivation/inspiration- queue loss of direction
time management
procrastination
lack of productivity
opportunities
looking at a lot of work is a good source of inspiration
living in a a big city, naturally a lot of opportunities and inspiration
resources & facilities at uni
enjoy experimenting
threats
realisation of ideas too late
managing my job alongside uni work
lack of motivation too late
Purchased this to scan for research in relation to the extension of 'preconceived and constructed' project. Inside the studios/work spaces of various creative industries (magazines, brands, practitioners).
Helen Van Meene
I have looked at Helen van Meene's photography as more of aesthetic research, but also how she portrays her subjects (always female) in certain environments. Although it's not 100% relevant to my own work in this project, it's perhaps the contrast that it is most informing. The girls in her photos seem placed there (as they probably are) in an unnatural and uncomfortable way.
Her use of square/medium format photography is something that interests me as well, as I want to start using other formats to shoot with.
