one of the biggest problems with coming across certain kinds of post is knowing that the author is speaking from a place of reason and emotional intelligence, but also that everything they are saying was frequently weaponized by a person who was always doing it for the worst, blame-deflecting, self-serving reasons and now you're getting annoyed at a post that you don't actually disagree with because of those experiences

as was previously stated, spouse and I have been reading War for the Oaks by Emma Bull, wherein the Seelie and Unseelie Courts make ritual war upon each other for (checks notes) the spiritual heart of Minneapolis (insert sarcastic rejoinders appropriate to residents) and just finished the part where the first battle occurs at Minnehaha Falls. since the book is weirdly hyper-fixated on describing the exact streets being taken in every scene (SERIOUSLY.), we attempted to retrace Eddie and the phouka's night ride from Loring Park to Tangletown and Minnehaha Parkway, only to find, in true Twin Cities fashion, that not one but three detours were underway and that this was functionally impossible. after swearing and asserting that we were under some kind of faery curse, we got to the Falls in the gloaming, chowed down on fish sandwiches, and confirmed to our satisfaction that yes, the locations in the battle scenes were as described (though the Creek was at low ebb now in August) and that we can sign off on Emma Bull's versimillitude re: topography. it was also dark and slightly unearthly, which helped the ambiance, especially with hordes of apologetic teenagers blazing it 420 style everywhere. the book was written in 1987 and we continue to debate which Court actually won. in the meantime, here is a terrible picture of the Falls at night.
