This post is dedicated to my Bumblebee Jasper. I don’t know where it is. It’s probably lost to me - found by someone else. They say that crystals will leave you when it has served its purpose in your life. That’s interesting because the crystal is used to invite happiness and to welcome action that changes positions of unhappiness into joy. I hope this crystal can help another the way my experiences with it helped me. I chanced upon these hairy caterpillars on my run a few days ago. There were a whole bunch of them - like fifteen. It just made me think about transformation and ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’. 🤓 They were all moving upwards on the stalks (?) of grass they were on, almost like they were moving towards their eventual transformation in space (moving upwards) and time (moving closer to the pupa phase). It was funny because I was jogging and my attention was immediately drawn towards it. The above was the meaning I drew from it. Change requires time and effort. I’ve been rehearsing drum lines to record for the music I’m making! I respect all creators for sharing their products with us. Creating and then releasing your work for consumption takes trust in the self. Learning to play this frame drum has been challenging but sharing it has been even scarier. But it’s exciting too! I’m keen to record and create sounds that can assist calming others. Ancient Chinese and Indian civilizations were of the belief that pleasant music could extract poison. Paracelsus is one of the most widely known toxicologists and is regarded as a pioneer in the science according to the western world. This quote of his has become a tenet of the science. I haven’t finished all these books but I do need more. I’m looking for mind expanding titles relating to the natural and spiritual world. This is the Crab Nebula. What you are seeing is the aftermath of a supernova that was visible from Earth, with the naked eye, in the year 1054. Chinese astrologers had documented a new ‘star’ in the sky. It was visible in the night sky for two years, rivaling the brightness of Venus, the evening star. The elements forged in stars, and, consequently, supernovas are the ingredients for all matter everywhere. This includes you and me of course. Shamanic practice entails connecting to the energy of our planet Earth but sometimes, during meditation, I like to think of the vastness of our universe. This provides real clarity and can drive activity in the most interesting ways for me. Tasks that seem daunting become almost infinitely smaller and choice becomes freedom. Remember the supernovae. Giordano Bruno (1548-1600) was an Italian philosopher who was burnt at the stake for his belief that there are many worlds and many solar systems like ours. The church saw this as heresy and punished him according to the custom of the time. Bruno remained steadfast in his beliefs, citing the studies of the mathematician Copernicus amongst others. He was a spiritual man. He could not understand why God would restrict his power to a singular system. We speak of many truths or our truth. Perhaps truth isn’t known to us or our human minds and egos aren’t able to handle truth. But truth is a human concept so aren’t we the only ones able to handle it? Yes, things are. But ideas change over time. So is truth rooted in the present? Is truth relative? Does it even matter? Bruno’s sacrifice was for scientific truth. We know that he was right. The church stifled his pursuit and killed him for it. How free are we to pursue our understandings of truth in this age? The truth will set you free is what they say. Origin legends really provide us a window into the worldviews of our ancestors. This collection of creation myths makes that process so much easier with its beautiful illustrations by Patricia Ludlow. This collection was gifted to me by the generous @theplanthropologist and it is a favourite in my growing bookshelf. Somehow the myths allow me to fall asleep calmly. I went for a walk with @theplanthropologist on Wednesday. I wanted to snap the pathway behind us but ended up getting this hyper-cool lens flare shot. I love how this photo seems to capture the rays of light mid-air, photons posing for an iPhone shot 🤓 Look at how beautiful the forest is. Why would we want to destroy this for industries sake? It’s silly because photosynthesis is the most remarkable energy conversion process we haven’t been able to replicate in our factories. Thankfully, there are ways in which we can maintain these spaces and even integrate them into our cities. Whether these strategies will be implemented in ALL the areas of South Africa able to support said strategies is yet to be seen. I am grateful to have access to spaces like these and to be reminded of the beauty of our planet. I feel so at peace in the forest I was seriously contemplating meditating under a tree and falling asleep under one, no jokes. I have started producing relaxing, ambient music. I have been hesitant because I am very self-critical so I am restarting slowly. Imposter syndrome can take you down if you aren’t careful! My goal is to blend Capetonian rhythms with solfeggio frequencies to aid meditation and connecting to the self. I do think the ambient genre is dominated by the Americans and Europeans even though there are some African artists pushing the form. If you know me personally, you’d know that I have a big issue with the Americanization of South African’s cultural diet, especially when it comes to music and the Western Cape. Don’t get me wrong, our Jazz and Hip Hop scene is phenomenal. I would just like to see more of our Capetonian culture present in other genre forms. I want to make the music I would like to hear. Calming, meditation music often has an otherworldly feel to it. And yes there are strong World music elements present in the composition, particularly the instruments used (in the ambient genre, not World music as a genre). Playing my frame drum in the mix, my music will ease the mind into a sonic journey but with strong Capetonian rhythmic composition and structure. Shamanic practice and spiritual practice is there for anyone willing to practice it. I want my music to invite ease and to wash away preconceived ideas of what is meant for whom.
