“Well, whatever it is, I understand Isabella. Plus, I’ve known her too long to think she could just blow him off like that. As much as me and Isaac don’t get along, I respect their relationship, but I support Izzie through whatever. Enough about them, though -- tell me about you. I already know you like waffles, that’s a big fact already.”

She was always seeking answers through him, hoping he’d know what to say, but he was just as lost as she was. “I – “ She loved him, but she didn’t know if she could be with him again. When they were together, they weren’t right for each other. She was too immersed into her studies – he simply wasn’t there and was not in the right mindset to be in a serious relationship. “Maybe we should stop seeing each other.” She didn’t want to, but it was the right thing to do. 

He should’ve expected as much, but he couldn’t help feeling a little disheartened. Carter smiled again, solemnly, but nodded it off nonetheless. “Okay. Yeah, I think we need that.” He stood up again, with purpose to leave this time, seeing as it was probably a cue that he had to go. “Just don’t stress yourself out too much, Roman Empire.” He joked lightly. “I did mean what I said, though.” This was a good thing. He could stay and beg, but he couldn't be so selfish. He was too comfortable at his level of life, and she could never stop wanting more--and she shouldn’t. So this was good. This was it. Doesn’t mean he couldn’t be sad about it. “I’ll go.”

“Well – Hailey and Simone. They’re roommates or something? Oh! Also, Allison and Nathan. There were a few others, but I can’t seem to remember their names.”

“Nathan? Yeah yeah, I knew ‘em! He was one of my best buds. I think I was outta there before Hailey and Simone, but I knew Allison, too. Tough gal, don’t think she liked me very much. I get it, though, I was a bit crazy in high school. They didn’t tell you about a crazy skinny boy runnin’ ‘round stealing people’s food did they? ‘Cause that was definitely not me.”

“I guess today is your lucky day. Oh yeah. Did you hear that Isaac and Isabella broke up?”

“Yeah, I did. Isaac’s a dick for leaving her like that--sorry if he’s your friend. What do you think about it?”

Her heart sank as he stood up to leave. She sat on the bed, watching as he navigated around the room for his keys. She hugged her knees to her chest – not knowing what to do or say. “What do we do?” It felt like a goodbye.

“You know I can’t answer that for sure.” He smiled sadly, fiddling with his keys in his hand to try and divert his attention. “You asked me earlier what you wanted us to be, but I didn’t ask you. Do you know?”

“I was too, for a minute, since that meant I wouldn’t be able to eat Chipotle for a while, but now it’s E. Coli free, and I’m back to eating it weekly! Oh, wow – a lot of people I’ve met at NYU are from North Carolina. Did you go to school with any of them by chance?”

“Most likely. If you name a few, I’ll probably be able to recognize ‘em--brain’s just a bit rusty, s’all.”

“Either you’re a really good guesser, or you saw my tweet about craving waffles the other day.”

He merely shrugged and flashed her a cheeky grin. “A wise man does his research. I like breakfast food, but I can’t say I’ve tried chicken and waffles before.”

She could feel his stare, but refused to meet his gaze. Carter was always the more affectionate one, Roman was always the hesitant one. Now, she had said the three words that scared her the most and she didn’t know what to do.

He let go of her hand and moved to get up, throwing on his jacket and grabbing his keys. But he couldn’t take another step forward. Everything in him yelled at him to go, but he couldn’t. Eventually, he just gave up, stepping back to sit on the edge of the bed. “I love you, too.” Was this a good idea?

As he held her hand, she moved in closer beside him. “I love you.”

He paused, and turned his head toward her direction. “Rome..” It pleased him to know it was dark enough for her not to recognize his facial expression, but it was clear he was in shock. She never said that before. Maybe a few times, jokingly, but never like this. She couldn’t mean it.

“I guess we’re hanging out then. Where are we going for food? Be warned, I’m a picky eater.”

“Well, we can go to this all-day breakfast place. Everybody loves breakfast food, right?”

“Yes, yes I do! I’m glad that feeling is mutual. Oh, definitely. As much as I love pasta – pizza is my one true love. Or Chipotle, Chipotle is another love of mine. You can never go wrong with Mexican food! Are you originally from New York?”

“I have to say, I was a little concerned ‘bout the whole E. Coli ordeal with Chipotle, but I had it recently, and I’m alright so far. No, I’m not--was in good ol’ Boston for a little while, but I’m a North Carolinian born and bred. Can you tell?”

“But is it selfish if I feel the same way?” She looked up at the ceiling before briefly closing her eyes. The thought of Carter not being there for her anymore was scary. “Carter?”

“I’m here,” he said as he searched for her hand and laced his fingers through hers. “Maybe it cancels out since we’re both being selfish.”

“Is this your way of asking me out or something?”

“If we call it a hangout, I won’t have to know it’s not a date and there’d be no disappointment on both sides. Up to you, though, I suppose.”

“No, no – I know what you mean. Same – definitely, same. It just happens you’re probably the only guy that doesn’t want sex – I mean, I’m sure you do, but not like, right off the bat or whatever.”

“Yeah, can’t say I haven’t thought ‘bout it. But you genuinely seem like you want to know me, and I wanna know you, and all’s good with the world. I am hoping to redo that pizza date though ‘cause gotta admit, I’m a pizza and beer guy.”

“I dunno. Remember Gavin, kid who tried to steal your stash? I was thinking we could break into his house, or light a bag of shit on his front door. Classic one. Or we can get food.”
