my friend's predictions for the terror as of episode 5

i've been making my friend, who has no knowledge of polar history, watch the terror with me. here are some of their thoughts and predictions thus far:

their favorite characters are crozier, blanky, and hickey.

they (honestly both of us) are obsessed with how smooth and luscious hickey's hair is. why is he serving

before the tuunbaq appeared, they were convinced that they would be attacked by a "big fish"

they believed the most popular ships would be jopzier (i had to explain that while it was popular, they were severely biased by me), blanky/crozier, and hickeygibs

they connected the name aglooka between the opening scene and the scene where crozier tells silna it's his inuktitut name

they call fitzjimmy "the adam driver looking guy" which absolutely fries me. they also despised him at the beginning and called him and franklin "the villains"

before franklin's death, their prediction was that hickey would be in the mutiny party with crozier, which like, holy shit.

during the scene where blanky is on the yardarm fighting the tuunbaq, they thought he "would die and take the bear with him." while this did not happen, i literally went insane.

after episode 5, i asked them to predict fates

crozier: dies

fitzjames: lives

hickey: lives

goodsir: dies

silna: lives

you may notice a key flaw with this last section. while they've been great at following details through the show, i guess they didn't catch the implication of me explaining that the victory point note "is one of the only solid details we know about the actual expedition...." i am so, so excited to see how they survive the ending.

TERROR CAMP JOPFACTS

-Jopson feels as though he has to prove himself to Francis and tries to be the very best steward one could possibly be

-Jopson finds comfort in order and a clear hierarchy and felt terrified when he was promoted to lieutenant

-Due to his proximity to Crozier and taking care of him through the withdrawal Liam considers him to be the most isolated crewmember on the whole expedition

-The cow story Francis tells Jopson to comfort him was improvised

-Jopson was nonverbally trying to convey to Little that everything will be fine during his "eating straight from the can" scene during the withdrawal

-He smiles as a coping mechanism when he's distressed in order to hide vulnerability

-He has never told the story of his mothers death before and him telling it to Francis is the first time he truly confides in him

-Jopson sees Hickey as a force of chaos and dislikes him, but still considered his flogging to be gruesome

there’s no way jopson doesn’t directly blame himself for his mother’s addiction (and death). absolutely no way he’s not neatly filed away a vast cavernous pit of self hatred because he made the decision to join the ross expedition, a conscious decision to leave behind his recently disabled mother—whom he clearly cares about—with a fresh laudanum prescription, a young child, and no other support.

he’s got abandonment issues up the wazoo either way but i think they are not rooted in his mother’s death; they’re rooted most perniciously in his decision to leave. a decision for which he received due punishment, both in the 36 lashes from his captain (for drunkenness when on duty let's not forget) and in his failure to see his mother through withdrawal.

to me that deep deep well of self hatred goes a long way towards explaining why he suffers through crozier's addiction with such stoic and soft-smiled devotion. a nightmare it may be, but oh how comforting. yes we're discussing jopson's mummy issues on main tonight
