“ i can't make you love me... ”
“do you hear yourself?” her brows knit together, her voice barely above a whisper. “i could love you more than anything in this world, and it still wouldn't change what's happening between us. sometimes love just... isn't enough.” she swallows hard, fighting the ache building in her chest. “we can't keep doing this to each other.”

alex listened in silence, his expression solemn. had love made him come? he hadn't thought it about it like that. it hadn't been a conscious decision. the hospital had called and alex had been out of the door before the call was over. whatever resentment he had been carrying from the breakup, from lauren's claim that sometimes love just wasn't enough, had disappeared the moment he'd heard the words serious head injury. "don't apologise," his voice was gentle. "it's not your fault." the determination in her face made him smile. a small, tired smile, but a smile nonetheless, despite the fact that it would do him no favours. once she got her memories back she would remember just how unhappy she had been with him, and all the reasons she had broken up with him - he was sure there were many. and if she didn't remember, she would just learn those reasons all over again, so he supposed it made no difference either way. "i'll ask," he said, getting up. "i don't think it'll be for a while yet, though. you need anything else while i'm up?"
“food would be nice. and something better than this...” lauren taps the now empty water cup with the tip of her finger. her voice is still rough, every word scraping against the lingering ache in her throat, but if given the choice between water and a diet coke, she'd pick the soda every time. “is it too soon to ask for a cheeseburger?” mcdonald's had always been her guilty pleasure. the one indulgence she'd cut out whenever she was performing, but considering the circumstances she doubted she'd be dancing again anytime soon. there's a small part of her clinging to the hope that she won't be confined to this hospital bed for long, even if she knows alex is probably right. as he slips out of the room, she sinks a little deeper into the mattress, her gaze lingering on the doorway long after he's gone. her thoughts circle endlessly. trying to force mismatched pieces into a picture that still refuses to make sense. he said she had been unhappy. but why?what could have happened between them that couldn't be fixed?
Tony almost chokes at Zuri's words, he scoffs, shakes his head and steps away and towards the first floor of the home she shared with her band mate, he gives no answer, it's not a yes nor a no and instead he focuses on her next comment about the strippers, which bring a bright smile to his lips. "They'll like you too." He turns to face her while walking backwards. "As long as you got cash." Tony added not long after with a smile curving his lips. "You earn that by not being stupid." He said as he stopped talking and stood in front of her, just inches away, making their height difference visible as he looked down towards her.
"And I'll know you aren't stupid when you start listening to me and stop trying to bargain what I am going to show you and what it's none of your business." Tony wasn't exactly lowkey about his family's lifestyle, you could see it on him, the tattoos, the expensive clothes, the gold. He didn't need to show anyone that he always carried a gun for people to know not to mess with him, you could just take a look at his constantly bruised knuckles to know. Still, the real Tony was a lot softer and kinder than the family Tony, and Zuri was getting the real Tony.
"First thing." He says as they finally step out of the door and he unlocks his car which sits flashy in the otherwise empty street. "If you feel like shit then you also don't know how to drink properly." He points out as he makes his way around his car into the driver's seat. "We're fixing that first." He said as he turned the engine on, the car roaring loud. "You want something sweet or spicy?" He asks back to real Tony again.
“i’ll listen when you stop thinking of this as a chance to boss me around.” her eyes roll involuntarily. the amount of effort this is going to take already has zuri second guessing asking tony for help. she has never been good at letting someone else, especially a man take the lead. she'd spent the better part of her life trapped in that role. submissive. quiet. never allowed to question anything. now whenever something even brushes against the edges of her losing control, she recoils from it like the plague. climbing into tony’s car though, she takes a slow breath. lips pressing into a thin line as she reminds herself why she’s here. why she asked him, of all people. because despite his lifestyle, his background, and his more than slightly abrasive attitude, she trusts him to keep her safe. or... as safe as doing drugs and committing heinous criminal acts can possibly allow.
“i thought the first thing was making sure no one came inside the apartment?” her head falls back against the seat, staring out through the windshield while her eyes steal a glance in his direction. “how does someone drink properly without getting a hangover?” she pauses before making a face. “actually... can we save that lesson for another day?” the mere thought of alcohol turns her stomach. her arms fold over her middle, trying to settle the lingering nausea. “we are talking about food, right?” she asks, brightening just a little. “spicy. always.” she would kill for a plate piled high with carne asada tacos right about now. “so during daylight hours, you mostly just run errands for your family? handle all the above board stuff?” this time she turns enough to actually look at him.
she isn't completely privy to everything tony's family does, but she's heard enough and seen enough to know they aren't the kind of people anyone crosses twice. her gaze drifts down his arms, taking in the tattoos. her own skin is decorated with just as many, but it's his hands that make her pause. his bruised knuckles stand out. darker than the rest of him, telling stories she doubts he'll ever volunteer. “you know...” she says quietly, “i don't just want to experience the bad stuff. i mean... i'm sure being a crime lord is exciting, but i want to see what you do for fun too. what you do when you actually relax... if that even happens.” the corners of her mouth threaten to curl into a smile, though she does a decent job of keeping her expression mostly neutral. “what do you do on your days off?”

he feels like a mess. leo paces the length of maggie’s front porch, wearing a path into the weathered boards as he tries to shake the restless energy buzzing beneath his skin. this isn’t him. he’s always composed, always measured. calm to the point people often mistake it for indifference or worse, dislike. his emotions stay neatly tucked away behind a steady voice and an unreadable expression. except when it comes to her. maggie has a way of pulling him apart without even trying. this isn't the sanitized room where she works though, and he isn't a paying customer called her madame. this was a date. their first real one. somehow that felt infinitely more terrifying than anything else he's ever faced.
his grip tightens around the small bouquet of night tulips, crumpling a handful of delicate petals before he catches himself. “shit…”
the crushed pieces flutter from his hand to the pavement. with a quiet sigh he carefully straightens what remains, doing his best to make the bouquet look like he hasn’t been strangling it for the last ten minutes. he actually made an effort tonight. the usual faded jeans and worn flannel are traded for tailored black slacks and a matching button down. the sleeves rolled neatly to his forearms and the top button left undone. he even managed to avoid coming home from his last job with any fresh cuts or bruises worth explaining. a minor miracle in itself. taking one last steadying breath, he steps toward the door. one knock. then another. he immediately takes a half step back, rubbing a suddenly damp palm against his slacks. the door opens. a small, almost sheepish smile tugs at his lips as he holds out the surviving tulips. his eyes settle on hers, saying far more than words ever could. “hey, beautiful.” his voice comes out low and rough, softened by an unmistakable hint of nerves. “ready for tonight?”
