Racism and other forms of systemic bias in JJBA fandom: It’s not (just) about our intentions; it’s about the *effects* of our actions

(Disclosure 1: This post is written from my vantage point as a white U.S. American and English-speaking JJBA fan who writes Avdol/Polnareff fics. My perspective has been shaped not only by my observations of JJBA fandom, but also by my repeated experiences of finding hurtful systemic biases– such as racism– in my own writing. I believe that resisting racism within myself and in the world first requires a willingness to acknowledge that: 1.) in a racist society, racism is the default, not the exception, and 2.) resisting vs. perpetuating racism is about the *effects* of my actions, not about my intentions.)

(Disclosure 2: This post owes a great debt to the research of Dr. Rukmini Pande. In this post, I draw on her work and attempt to apply some of her ideas to JJBA fandom. I recommend her book “Squee from the margins: Fandom and race” [2018, University of Iowa Press].)
