Freelance update // Build your relationships
Building relationships is so important when it comes to starting a bustling freelance career. When I first started networking 12 years ago, I met a man name John Fischer who worked at a post house downtown. I actually met John through creativecow surprisingly. I saw a tutorial he posted and noticed he lived in the same city as me. So I reached out to him. He was really kind enough to invite me to his studio and give me a tour. I met a lot of cool people and we stayed connected over the years. Fast forward 12 years, John is now an in-demand freelance motion artist working for major studios across the country.
This past January, I reached out to John again because I was looking for more work. I also wanted to understand how to run my business more effectively and identify networking strategies. At the time he was working on a job with caterpillar. Apparently one of the other motion designers on the team had some family issues and had to leave the job. John evidently vouched for me to one of the producers and before you know it, I was brought on the job to help move us pass the finish line. Ultimately, I was asked to help out on two projects with this company. I'm incredibly grateful for John and the opportunities he has shared with me. What I'm trying to share is if you build connections with other motion designers, it will pay off immensely in the long run.
