if nancy said jump, steve would do it without any thought and jonathan would ask why
Jonathan wholeheartedly believing that Nancy wouldn’t want him to come visit her at the hospital to see if she was okay and instead focus on the mission speaks VOLUMES when you remember how she explicitly told him that she was “glad [he wasn’t there]” for her in s4 so he could take care of Mike and his brother. He wasn’t there in s4 when Steve was tenderly cradling Nancy’s body and caressing her face to comfort her after seeing visions of her dead family, wasn’t there to witness the sheer relief on her face when she saw Steve at Fred’s crime scene and knew she wouldn’t have to face the darkness all on her own, wasn’t there to catch the rare smiles and laughter Steve somehow managed to draw out of her even though they were in the bleakest of situations, on the precipice of the world ending.
Jonathan and Nancy have normalized her acting as more of a caretaker in their relationship vs Jonathan being the silent provider—something that Natalia Dyer has mentioned is a stark contrast to Steve/Nancy’s relationship [“They ask her to be different things in a way…with Jonathan she’s more of the caretaker, and I think maybe she thinks Steve is a little more caretaking”]. And that isn’t because j*ncy’s established dynamic is necessarily what Nancy WANTS in a relationship (in fact, that kind of dynamic is practically a carbon copy of her parents’ loveless, unsupportive marriage) but because she’s slowly acclimated to their relationship patterns and gotten used to internalizing emotions when Jonathan’s presence and similar behavioral tendencies haven’t encouraged her to open up. She’s come to expect that she won’t be receiving the nurturing treatment that she subconsciously wants and needs, relying on self-soothing tactics and emotional suppression as coping mechanisms because of this lack of trust, intimacy, and vulnerability between them. The rare occasions when she’s been vulnerable enough to confess her insecurities have resulted in Jonathan taking that olive branch and setting it on fire in front of her—[“I waited” “Yeah, for like only a month.” // “That was humiliating! Humiliating.” “Yeah, the real world sucks. Deal with it like the rest of us.” // “They’re assholes, okay? I get it. But it’s just some stupid story.” “Oh, it's stupid?”]—which then causes her to retreat even further back into her protective shell and not confront her feelings.
She’s become alarmingly desensitized to this emotional dismissiveness, so used to Jonathan, her partner, NOT being the person she feels comfortable being vulnerable with because she can’t trust that he’ll truly listen to her, reciprocate that vulnerability, and not invalidate her feelings. Though they may bond over their shared trauma, they have failed to cultivate a safe space where both of them feel encouraged to share their doubts, fears, and insecurities. Contrary to antis beliefs, Jonathan DOESN’T understand her on this deeper, fundamental level because the way he perceives her is entirely within the context of their relationship, a relationship in which concealing one’s innermost feelings has become the modus operandi. His insular, dogmatic thinking manifests itself in his refusal to recognize that the way she acts with him is not entirely reflective of her whole, true, unguarded self.
So, yes, it very well may be true that Nancy wouldn’t want Jonathan to visit her at the hospital and instead focus on the mission…but that’s not to say that she wouldn’t want ANYONE to visit and comfort her in that situation…just not her own boyfriend, because that’s not who they are to each other and how they’re supposed to interact.
And doesn’t that say a lot about their relationship? 🤔 It almost sounds like…the foundation of their relationship is fucked. 🧐
j*ncy is more ted/karen than stancy will ever be. you know why? because as natalia said, nancy is the caretaker of the relationship, she held jon when will was possessed and was there for him at the hospital, and what does she say jon did after? that he ‘disappeared’. after all the investigation and sherlock holmes-ing together in S1, he dipped, because his priority was always elsewhere.
he doesn't understand what nancy needs, like at all. which is ironic bc they implied and kept trying to tell us that I'm S2 steve didn't understand her, and jon did because he helped her avenge barb or something (did that erase her guilt? which she still has to this day??)
he knew that nancy needed comfort in S1 after her encounter in the UD, and stayed there for her, but in S5? her parents were on death's door, and refused to spend 5 mins to check on her.
he said he loved that nancy never does anything half way, but contradicts himself in S3 when he called nancy's scoop a stupid story, because it didn't serve HIM, or give him any advantage. he only likes her ideas and opinions when it concerns him or his family.
he mocks their parents marrying young and living a boring, miserable life, and guess where jncy are now. they're the epitome of self fulfilling prophecy, jon kept affirming that they'll end up miserable and resentful.
they're both the avoidant x avoidant duo, which was literally part of their appeal, they didn't need to put effort into communicating and had it "easy" in the beginning, it's quite symbolic that their first kiss happened right after a random grown ass man spells out their feelings FOR them, doing the work for them, and they DENY their feelings before they just jump to making out. no communication.
I find it hilarious when I see stuff like "they have their own love language they don't have to say I love you to eachother" yeah because they're both avoidant and only enable their similar behaviour in the relationship, they become avoidant TOGETHER, it's why their communication problem has dragged on for this fucking long.
steve was the emotional caretaker in stancy's relationship, he was expressive with his affection, they were together for 10 months by the start of S2 and he was still openly in love with her, which nancy CLEARLY enjoyed, and he pushed her to actually get out of her shell and tell him how she really felt, which unfortunately led to their painful break up, but he was brave enough to pull the plug, and not drag things out, because there are only two options, communicate or break up.
nancy was so descriptive in S4 as to why she loved jon, and what was jon's? "oh she's so ambitious, she works" well it makes sense that jon only sees that side of her, considering that they got together because of their monster hunting expeditions, and how nancy getting shit done has helped in jons favour (will)
it shows that nancy CAN be expressive, but the environment she's in just doesn't bring out that habit in her.
steve sees the REAL her. not JUST the badass gun wielder ace reporter. he said it himself, that she cares about other people, that she was NOT the priss everyone thought she was, that she has a heart of gold, those are her CORE qualities (I love the genius who brought up that the bopper theory also applies to nancy as a person, hard on the outside, soft secretly)
even her ambition as a reporter was her wanting to give people a platform to get the REAL story, like she did with mrs driscoll, and wayne munson, it was driven by empathy.
nancy needs hope, not pessimism, she's already a skeptical person, steve is hope. steve having big dreams and embracing his role as the babysitter because of his supposedly emotionally suppressed upbringing is the optimism that balances out their dynamic, she's so lighthearted and smiley around him, and it's completely genuine, it always was. the scene of her lightening up after seeing steve get out from the car was deliberate, as he's been representing hope the entire season ("I still have hope") as a contrast to jon's "the cycle never ends!"
she may not "want" comfort (which is inherently untrue to begin with, in S1 she told jon she didn't want to be alone, she thinks she SHOULDN'T want comfort because of her guilt) or flowers, but that's because she's conditioned herself into believing her needs don't matter, that work always comes first. steve can show her that it's okay to want to prioritise yourself.
people think steve is ted simply because his parents have a cushy job like him, and their similar upbringing financially, their similarity ends there, it's so surface level.
!!!
i cannot believe people are really supporting jonathan's side of not wanting to go see HIS GIRLFRIEND and BE THERE FOR HER and GIVE HER A HUG after her parents ALMOST DIED. like she literally found her mum in the kitchen slowly bleeding out from multiple deep wounds over her body and somehow any mission they'd planned takes priority over that??? "but steve wanted to give her flowers!" yeah because it's what you do when a loved one is in hospital!! if steve can cook he'd probably offer to bring a fucking lasagna too, not because he's trying to butt in on their relationship, but because he's trying to be a DECENT HUMAN BEING.
jon puts her first! jon supports her! jon supports her wanting to go to college and have a career! HE CAN'T EVEN SUPPORT HER AT A TIME WHEN SHE NEEDS IT THE MOST.
speak on it!!
all the stancy hate and i'm sitting here like, y'all want her with j*n? the guy who couldn't even call her? couldn't write a letter? actively lied to her face? lucas out here spending day after day with his gf who's in a coma, joyce literally flew to another country for hop to save him, and nancy can't even get a phone call? ok. but stancy's the problem here. sure.
anyway stancy endgame <3
steve looks at nancy. she looks at the gate shrinking fast
"Do it."
that's all steve needs, he shifts into drive and floors it.
that’s all steve needs.
i repeat, that’s all steve needs.
one of the very first scenes of season 5 shows jonathan sleeping in the basement with will instead of nancy. as insignificant as this might seem, it just shows once again will is jonathan's priority. this has been shown to the audience since the first season. it's not a bad thing, but if he wants to be in a relationship he needs to learn to also prioritize his girlfriend. we know will is important to him, that's his brother, but that shouldn't stop you from also prioritizing another person you supposedly love. and as stupid as it sounds, steve himself has pointed out how he's focusing more on steve than his own girlfriend. he's prioritizing winning to steve rather than being a good boyfriend. now, why the hell would he think it's a good idea to propose to nancy during the end of the world just to solve their problems? it's like... these two never know how to solve their issues.
and now that we know will can have the same powers as vecna because of his connection to the hive-mind, there's a big chance he'll have to die in order to kill vecna. i'm not saying i want that to happen, because, believe it or not, i've liked will since season 1, but it is a possibility and the duffers have stated there will be deaths this season. but, if will were to die, do jonathan stans really think he'd be in a good place to maintain an already stagnated relationship? do people who like his character... even understand him? i don't think jancy should be endgame whether will lives or dies. if will does survive this season, he'll still be jonathan's priority over nancy and everything/everyone else.
i'll take single nancy as long as she doesn't end up with jonathan.
