“I-” What, he what? Jamie couldn’t really put it into words, had opened his mouth only to promptly close it, lips forming a thin line. There was too much buzzing around in his head to properly explain it and he didn’t like it. He didn’t like that he wasn’t good with words, that he could never seem to find the right ones. He found himself clenching his fists around the shirt in his hands only to slowly release. It wasn’t entirely fair to be frustrated, it wasn’t directed at Niko, it wasn’t his fault and he didn’t want this to escalate in any way. “There’s a lot tae unpack.” Was what he settled on, eyes still on the garment in his hands and not on the other.
“It’s not something I want tae get intae. Because if I get intae it an’ ye up an’ leave again, I dinnae what I’m gonnae do wae myself, Niko.” Even that felt like too much, like he was saying too much, sharing too much. “It’s fucking stupid, I know it is, tae think ye might not want me anymore, but it’s a very real fear an’ I’d rather jus’ pretend it didnae exist. It’s easier.” It didn’t feel entirely fair to say either, but it wasn’t an accusation. No, if anything, Jamie would be the one to leave this time, Niko had made a bit of a home here, a business.
Letting out a slow breath that technically wouldn’t do anything, he gave a slight nod of his head, looked to his progeny only briefly before pulling his shirt over his head and again smoothing his hands through his hair. “I love you.” The words came out slowly, fully enunciated, with a tightening in his chest. “I love you an’ I dinnae know what I’d do if ye left again.”
There’s a lot tae unpack. And that’s how it would be, from now until eternity. Niko wanting Jamie to open up to him, to give him all that he’d been shielded from over the years; and Jamie, constantly finding some way to keep it all from him. It was frustrating, and disheartening. To be this close to the man that owned his heart, and find himself greeting a brick wall, each and every time. It wasn’t precisely what had him turning away, now or back then, but Niko knew that eventually it very well would have. How did one keep loving someone that only gave them pieces? Parts of themselves? “Jamie, I ---,”
But his words were cut off, interrupted as his sire started to speak. Immediately, Niko was turning back towards him, eyes narrowed. The spoken words were not something that he had been anticipating, even when he knew that he deserved them. After a hundred years together, he had chosen himself over Jamie. Had chosen his freedom over settling down in Scotland, where they could spend many more centuries together. It was understandable that Jamie would fear his departure, would expect him to just up and leave once again. But hearing the words spoken out loud, Niko didn’t rightly know what to say.
In his momentary silence, as his mind tried to conjure up the words that would set Jamie’s mind at ease, he heard the ones that he had been begging for during the century they spent side by side. If his heart were capable of beating, he was sure it would have stopped right then and there. “You --- what?” Stunned, was the best way to explain how Niko was feeling. And it lasted for a few short beats, before he was suddenly moving forward. His hands reached out to catch Jamie’s, drawing him closer, “I’m not leaving you. Not again.” And it was the truth, even if he hadn’t expected to see Jamie within Corinth Bay. The reconnection was enough to remind him of what he had been missing, of what his heart had been yearning for all these years. It would always be Jamie, even if he had been too blind to see it back then.
Where: The hospital Who: @noahkramer
It was certainly never a good sign to see Niko roaming the halls of the hospital, especially with such a wicked little smirk tugging at the edges of his lips. Though, perhaps that was simply because of who his gaze landed upon. There was something about the human, something that seemed almost very much not human. “So,” the vampire started, leaning against the wall as he eyed the other. “There’s something special about you now, hm?”

“Yer upset aboot my fake last name. That’s what got ye.” He didn’t mean to sound so blunt but between the frustration at himself and fending off whatever fucking ghost Maddox had saddled him with, he couldn’t help but feel exasperated even if he knew Niko was in the right. “Came up wae it when I was mibbe nineteen, was a stupid joke.” That’d just stuck. Sure it wasn’t the best one, kind of morbid, but it’d been better than his father’s last name. And maybe it was Maddox’s stupid fucking ghost that kept coming and going with faces of various people from the past at all hours of the day that had him too tired to even have this fight.
Another sigh and he was making himself more comfortable on the couch, spreading his arms out along the back of it as he slouched, his gaze on the ceiling and not on Niko because that’d be too much. “James Alexander Brattin. That was my fucking name, after my dear old da.” His father’s first and last name as his middle and surname, it was fucking pathetic and he’d nearly done away with Alexander, too. “An’ I figured I didnae fucking want it anymore after I was beaten waein an inch of my fucking life for being a stupid fucking teenager an’ he knew aboot it.” That’d been the real kicker about the whole situation, that the whole household had known he’d gotten caught sneaking around with Ceit. “If it werenae fer the fucking lass I got caught messing ‘round wae sneaking me oot of the house, I cannae imagine I’d have even made it oot.” He remembered the whole ordeal vividly despite it happening two hundred some years ago and it was still-
“I’ve been ye. An’ her. Stupid fucking stable lad making eyes at a lord’s daughter, got thrown oot on my fucking arse. Ye an’ I both know how fucking cruel the world is, I didnae want tae see anything happen tae her.” His right hand came to rub at his eyes with his forefinger and thumb before he let out a slow breath and sat up and grabbed for his previously discarded shirt off the other end of the couch. “I’ll go.” The words were mumbled as rose to his feet, free hand ruffling the back of his hair to keep it from drying flat.
“It’s not about the --- for faen skyld,” his words slipped into Norwegian without a second thought, trailing out so quickly as the tangent continued. At a certain point, Niko didn’t even know what he was saying, whether there was any actual meaning behind them, or if he were just saying them to get his anger out. “That’s not the fucking point, Jamie; and you damn well know it.” No, it wasn’t that Jamie had given Rosie the fake name to use, or that she paraded herself around like his sister. It was the simple fact that she had known about it, had been given a look into Jamie’s past that Niko had only ever considered in the moments of downtime. For how many years had he gone around, believing the name was what Jamie had been straddled with since birth, since he was a human kid with a darkened past. And now, with the emergence of someone he hadn’t even known existed, more lies were being tugged forth from their past.
James Alexander Brattin. The name came so unexpectedly, for Niko was sure that Jamie would once again lie through his teeth. That his past would be shut away behind some door that he may never be able to open. If he’d been capable of breathing, he was sure that his lungs would have expelled whatever breath they had been holding. A narrowed gaze fell upon his sire, Niko quiet as he listened to the words spill forth. Ones that he should have heard a century ago. Even without them, he had known that Jamie’s past hadn’t been easy. Much like his own. He knew that the other came from a broken home, and maybe that’s what had connected them when language had once separated them. They’d been much the same, but the one distinct difference: Niko had willingly told him everything. He had never once kept a secret from Jamie, had given himself over completely to his sire, to his love. And in the end, nearly every aspect of Jamie’s life had been kept from him. But how much had been told to Rosie?
“Don’t,” the word was out before he could stop it, gaze shifting away from the man who stood shirtless in his home. His jaw worked, clenching and unclenching, as he tried to formulate the words that needed to be said. “I don’t care about which last name you use, and I don’t care about who you turned or why.” A hand lifted to trail through tousled hair, disheveled through the annoyance that had seized him. “What I do care about is how much you have, and continue to hold from me.” Something was now replacing the annoyance he’d once felt, as memories and thoughts continued to invade his conscious. “We spent a century together, and I got no closer to knowing anything about your past. You want to keep certain parts, certain details from me, fine. But all of it?” Now his gaze shifted back to Jamie, looking as if he were seeking out some kind of sign. Anything that would show that Jamie had meant what he said, that he would start trying with him.
* ana cavallero
Her scoff resounds with amusement, however it holds more annoyance than humor. “Do-gooders. They’re a plague.” Not that Ana subscribed to a notion of moral versus immoral creatures, she simply preferred to be left to her own devices without noble, misguided intervention. “And be cautious about who you speak with. How well concealed was your acquiescence of Void?” For all intents and purposes, Niko had been a triumph of a pupil and were he any semblance of the vampire that she’d intentionally carved him out to be–– well, Ana knew quite well how she would have staked claim over something. “No. Lucas truly believes that their little movement stops at the cubi and he would never make a slight against me. His brother, however…”
It was often comical to see those who thought they were doing good, by ridding the world of evil. To take matters into their own hands, and become exactly what they were saving the innocent from. It was yet another form of amusement for him. “Very well. My purchase of it appears as just that. With the original owner taking my generous payment to travel elsewhere.” Ana would know the true way that Niko had become owner of Void, given that she was the very one that had taught him how to do it. “And if the brother were to cease being a problem, how would you feel then?” For familial ties had never meant anything to Niko, not when he’d gone back to rid the world of each of his own.
* rosie price
She didn’t know who he was, but Rosemary had a suspicion she knew how they were connected the second he opened his mouth. So this was why Jamie was so nervous when he brought her here. This was the person from his past that he’d just run into. “There’s not enough sun there,” she responded smoothly. “Besides, my brother asked me to join him in Greece. What’s it to you?” Another vampire, interesting. Dangerous. Rosie didn’t like being in the dark, which is exactly where she felt right now standing in front of this stranger who knew more about her than she did about him.
Brother. The word was absolutely comical. And Niko would have laughed about it, had he not hated every aspect for what she represented. Because she represented everything that he didn’t have. The knowledge of Jamie’s past, the life that he’d brushed aside in his pursuit to have the world at his fingertips. She was living the life that he should have had. And he despised her for it. “To me? Oh, Kjæreste, it doesn’t matter one bit to me.” That was a lie, but she didn’t need to know that. “It simply would be a shame to have a baby vampire causing messes in the city.”

Where: Void Who: @thepriceisrosie
There wasn’t much that happened at Void which went unnoticed by Niko; it was his club, after all. And so, upon her first step into his establishment, he was immediately notified of her presence. It wasn’t that he had ordered it, nor had he particularly cared what she did around the city, but he was curious about a great many things. Number one being how much she knew about Jamie’s past. About the aspects that had clearly been withheld from him, despite the century that he and their sire had spent together. “Shouldn’t you be scurrying off back to Scotland?” Back to the home that Jamie had acquired for them, for him. It was bittersweet, and Niko couldn’t fault Rosie for what had happened, but the annoyance was there all the same.
* jamie price
“I didnae think ye’d want tae meet her.” Because you’d act like this. But he didn’t dare speak his annoyance out loud, not when he was in the wrong. Instead Jamie let out a sigh, ran a hand through his still damp hair as he tried to think of how to put his reasoning into words. “I called her here when the fucking ghosts or whatever the fuck they were, were around because I couldnae fuckin’ deal wae them an’ I missed her.” It’d been selfish to do so, he knew that now. After the fog had rolled in, the Eidolons or whatever weren’t anything to worry about. It felt uncomfortable to meet Niko’s gaze but he forced himself to do it anyways. He deserved an explanation, at least. “She’s a century younger than ye, found her in the states. Ran intae her a couple of times, got her oot of trouble.” He could still remember that day vividly, just like he could remember meeting Niko the first time.
Granted, he loved Rosie, but time hadn’t seemed to completely stop at the sight of her.
“Waited til she was twenty-five tae turn her. Last name is because it made traveling easier. Wasnae a big deal tae me.” It’d been more than a little amusing to slap the fake surname on everything, but it’d still been difficult to move her into the home that was supposed to be theirs. Niko didn’t need that guilt trip right now though, that wasn’t what this was about. “I’m sorry, I shouldnae have taken her. I didnae mean ye any disrespect.”
It wasn’t the concept of Rosie herself that irritated Niko, but rather, the pure fact that Jamie had withheld information from him. Again. How many months had it been now, since they’d run into each other? And how many months had passed them by with no new information for him to learn? It had been just over two hundred years since he had been turned, and Niko still knew nothing about Jamie’s upbringing, about what had led him to becoming a vampire. About anything that held substance in his sire’s life. Rosie was simply another part of Jamie’s life that he knew nothing about. And hell, she might even know more than him, might even be able to hold it over his head should they ever properly meet. Or would Jamie hold that out of his grasp, as well?
Yet it all boiled down to one slip of Jamie’s tongue. Or had he meant to throw it in his face? “Last name?” It was spoken smoothly, with all the control that Niko possessed over the years that he’d been living as a vampire. But his fingers betrayed the anger that was boiling just below the surface, begging to be released. The state of Jamie mattered little to him now, his annoyance forcing him to look past what have may made him pause in any other situation. “So what, you learned from your mistakes with the first one, and bettered yourself with the second one?” It was a cheap shot, but Niko didn’t particularly care for Jamie’s feelings in the moment. “Disrespect? Oh no, Kjæreste, it goes beyond that.” He was rising from his seat now, body tensed with the anger radiating through him. “You’ve shown how little you give a damn. Or was this payback because I left?” Eyes narrowed on his sire now, “Since you find it so easy to talk to her, I suggest you go back to her now.”

“It’s not a big deal..” That the bartender had to read because they’d carded her because despite being a year older than himself physically, Rosie was very much babyfaced. And of course Jamie couldn’t trust any of the bar staff not to run to Niko considering the moment he walked in the door, he was certain they all collectively rolled their eyes and the other’s assistant reordered another desk. Oh no, he wasn’t surprised that someone had gone to Niko and said something, he’d even tried to anticipate it. It was a conversation they needed to have eventually, it’s not like he could hide them from each other. But despite that, Jamie sat there on Niko’s couch looking at the other with his arms crossed over his chest like a petulant child. “She asked tae go, I took her. I didnae know ye were gonnae be around. That’s on me, I’ll admit that.” Guilt sat in his gut heavily as he reflected on what he’d said out loud. He could have called, texted, anything, Niko had a right to be at most annoyed. @nikojordahl
Annoyed was a relative understatement in this current situation. It wasn’t that Niko didn’t expect Jamie to run around with various riffraff, he knew about his unexplained care for those in unfortunate predicaments. Though, he didn’t know why, as he didn’t know much when it ultimately came to his sire. “You didn’t know I was going to be at my own club?” The question came equipped with a rather dramatic roll of his eyes, followed closely by a string of Norwegian that surely contained more curse words than not. “So --- she’s just another part of your past that you didn’t want me to know about then, is that it?” A narrowed gaze fell onto the vampire across from him, a mixture of anger and disappointment radiating off of him. Jamie had said he’d open up more, had said that the wouldn’t hold back --- and yet, when given the chance to tell Niko something, he’d banked on him not being there. So much for moving forward.
* ana cavallero
This was precisely why Ana had always held a preference and affection towards Niko, he could recognize superior company when it appeared. Unlike others who were content to bide their time with useless wastes of supernatural ability. “It seems that not everything dead stays that way. Have you heard the legend of phoenixes?” The elder vampire provided a brief overview of the species from her own discussions with Lucas, not one to skimp on any details where Niko was concerned. “Supposedly they’re here to eradicate the cubi problem in this city, but we all know how fanatics work. One good deed snowballs into higher aspirations until everyone has a target on their back for even thinking murderous thoughts.” Lacquered nails tapped thoughtfully against her chin. “We have to step carefully now, mijo. It’s a game of chess that we can’t afford to lose.”
Phoenixes. They were something of myth, much like the cubi had once been. Written in various forms of text, spoken of as a higher entity than many others. He had known from a young age to not write anything off in this new world, but some things always seemed too good to be true. “It seems we have a growing infestation within this city,” he mused lightly, fingers toying with his lesser lip. This no doubt had something to do with the strange draw that he’d originally had to the city, when he was scouting out his next venture and wound up upon the cobbled streets. “I’ll implement new guidance at the club.” Again, his mind was simply pushing out the little musings as they sprung forth. Eventually, his gaze lifted once more to her, narrowing ever so slightly, “And what does your once dead husband have to say about this? Is he intent on ridding the city of more than its cubi problem?”
* jamie price·
“Ye want tae stop glowring at everyone, love?” Jamie didn’t think he’d ever been this amused to be in Niko’s company. He figured it was much needed after all of the shit he’d dealt with the last couple of weeks. It was pride, it was hot out, it felt fair to forgo a shirt entirely. Not like the weather really bothered him, but other people were bound to believe it. And it was all worth it for the eyebrow Niko quirked at him upon first seeing him. And maybe for the few darkened glares he shot passerbys whose gazes lingered a little too long. “Ye dinnae see me eyeing up everyone who takes a look at ye.” @nikojordahl·
“Once they keep their eyes to themselves,” the words slipped out smoothly, but Niko couldn’t mask the hint of jealousy underlining each of them. In truth, he had nothing to be jealous of. For at the end of the day, he would be the one pushing Jamie back into his bed. Perhaps he’d blame it on getting Void ready, given that he intended to participate wholly in the event taking place. While he’d already set up a booth for the daytime festivities, he also intended to throw various parties throughout the week, which consumed much of his free time. And patience. “Oh, would you like a gold star for that, Kjæreste? Or perhaps a medal.” His words were teasing now, hand reaching out to take hold of Jamie’s hand, fingers intertwining.
