Imagine being treated like you were worthless, being physically and mentally abused by the people who are meant to love you and encourage you, day after day, year after year. Nothing changes. And then society ends and the world changes and you meet a person who sees who you are at your core and likes it. They offer kindness and support and ultimately friendship through the worst times of your life.

I’ll never get over the bond Carol and Daryl share, the trust they have in each other, the space they give each other, the lack of judgement, the soft humour, the gentle intimacy…. That these two survivors found that kind of unconditional love will never not make me emotionally compromised.
