Okay, okay, okay, so - ignoring the potential iffiness of translations and speaking more generally, I think my current hope for Dabi’s mental and emotional state with regards to his family is that he’s buried a lot of emotions quite deep and is mistake when he doesn’t expect to see them again.

He’s a character that’s been very up-front and in-your-face about his dislike for Endeavor, hero society, and heroes as a whole. The amount of glee that he’s experiencing as he unveils his ‘one person can send everything crashing down’ plot of revealing himself as Touya is a delight to behold. It also absolutely speaks to this moment being a culmination of the revenge goal he’s been striving for! His hope here is to sow chaos and cause harm to Endeavor - and I really, really want him to run into the same problem that Hawks did when he was confronted with what he had to do for his ideals.

Which is to say, I really want him to think he’s being objective and righteous and pragmatic about this. I want him to think that this is going to be the most satisfying moment of his life so far. And then I want, in reality, for him to be confronted, closely and personally, with the fact that he’s just made his mom cry, or broken his favorite brother’s heart, and to realize… well, he still hates the world. He’ll still burn it to the ground just to take Endeavor with him. But that doesn’t mean his actions haven’t hurt himself, either.

You can’t be as passionate and dedicated to ruining a family (or a society that you want to ruin because of your family) if you don’t care a great deal. Dabi’s primary form of ‘caring’ is hatred and righteous anger, and those emotions have to evolve from being hurt, from being betrayed, from having your love and happiness ruined. The hopes and relationships that were taken away from Touya through Endeavor’s abuse are what spawned Dabi’s rage, and I want the faint dregs of those same family connections to be what ruins him.

(Now, of course, I don’t have much faith in the narrative taking this story in that direction. But it would sure make for a compelling villain arc!)
