Rest in peace, John Blanche
The father of Warhammer 40k art direction and the man that has inspired me as an artist, down to inspiring my current artstyle (and I am sure will continue to inspire me, even in death). 40k just wouldn't be 40k had it not been for the foundation of grimdark sci-fi that he laid.
Farewell, you absolute legend.
Rest in power Mr Blanche

curiosity: when drawing the illustrations, the CLAMP group wanted everyone involved in the war to have chains and those who were not involved had ties. Furthermore lelouch's allies have black wings while britannia's allies have white wings

kyujitai formal number kanji phone keypad...
these are used all over monogatari, in most scenarios in which numbers appear, and I find them to be an interesting detail in illustrating araragi's alienation
araragi is good at math. it's one of the few things that he's been able to rely on, in fact. so it's safe to assume that numbers are something that feel natural to him
but here, and in other places, numbers are all written in kyujitai kanji. these aren't numbers that bring him comfort—they're just another use of language to isolate him, to make him feel like he has no place in this world. it's the same reason that so many place and character names, even most words, are written in katakana. araragi feels like a foreigner in his own home
I didn't know this until my wife pointed it out, but in china, these characters are used in financial contexts, such as on checks and in bank notes, because their high stroke counts make them difficult to alter. for example, if you wrote 一 on a check, someone could just add one stroke to make it 十, and the amount will have increased by a factor of 10. so 壹 is used instead
I'm not sure if this is the case in japan as well, but if it is, that would add an additional implication to their use here, wouldn't it? these numbers would have a connection to the world of finance. in addition to representing araragi's alienation, they would also symbolize his disillusionment with capitalism and economics. we can already see this in some cases. araragi's family is rich, but he doesn't seem to comprehend money, or have any sense of scale for it. when oshino asks araragi for 5 million yen, araragi pays it off without much trouble
so what does it say that the araragi family phone is emblazoned with digits written with characters used in finance? everything in his life has been set up for him to achieve the same level of wealth and affluence as his parents—police officers who enforce capitalist property relations—but all of it only makes him more alienated, and more miserable
it's not even just the numbers! most of the writing you see in the background is using pre-1945 orthography, with kyujitai kanji, katakana okurigana, and right to left reading order on single lines instead of just in vertical writing (e.g. レマ止 rather than 止まれ on stop signs, 險危 rather than 危険 on warning signs, etc.)
