Project AH A MAY - Designers at Yamaha switch roles to create each other’s products
Product designers at Yamaha switched places with members of their motorcycle division so they could apply their unique talents and design philosophies to each other’s sectors and the results are utterly fascinating.
Intended to allow their designers to understand one another whilst also ‘embodying the spirit of Yamaha’, the teams’ efforts have resulted in various products including those pictured above:
‘Raijin’ (‘God of Thunder’) - a fantastic cage-like sphere filled with drums and cymbals
‘Root’ - an elegant (if seemingly unrideable) motorcycle with a curving body
‘Fujin’ (‘God of Wind’) - a spinning two-person Marimba wherein one plays while the other spins the bars round
The designs showcase what spectacular things can result from this sort of interdisciplinary project. I hope other companies with such varied teams can follow suit and push the bar a little.
