If you look up why Mitch Marner left Toronto, this is the answer you’ll get
Mitch Marner left the Toronto Maple Leafs via a sign-and-trade to the Vegas Golden Knights because of extreme off-ice harassment and a desire for a fresh chapter. The intense scrutiny and safety threats to his family pushed him to seek a lower-profile hockey market.
Specific factors driving his departure include:
Threats to Family Safety: Following playoff exits, Marner's home address was leaked online, and fans were encouraged to visit his house. There were also incidents of items being thrown in his yard and traced death threats, requiring him to hire full-time security.
New Fatherhood: With the birth of his son, Marner prioritized the security and peace of mind of his family, feeling that Toronto had become an unacceptably tense environment.
Intense Media Scrutiny: As a homegrown star in a hockey-crazed market, the relentless criticism and "outside noise" became a severe mental drain, eventually prompting him to change chapters and play in a non-traditional hockey market
It’s just so ridiculous, death threats?! Seriously?! It’s hockey! No player should endure so much criticism that they fear for their own safety
It’s so sad that his childhood dream was to play for Toronto and when he got it, it was ruined by undeserved criticism.
And now that he’s being ridiculed for not wanting the world to know about everything that he went through in Toronto. It’s stupid! Like, yes, it’s kinda random that he said he’ll talk about it if VGK wins the cup but the fact that he’s willing to even consider talking about it AFTER he was criticized and threatened by fans? We should be considering ourselves lucky that he’s letting us know anything more.
I just don’t understand what people hate about him so much? Like why’s he so bad that he deserves this treatment? I don’t think people understand how much this affects people. It’s easy for people to say ‘It’s just media. It doesn’t matter.’ Or ‘It’s fine because he knows it’s all bullshit anyways.’ Maybe that’s true for some people but not for everyone.
Jack Eichel says he can still see the emotional damage Marner has. Is that really what people think he deserves? No one deserves that in my opinion.
I’m genuinely curious to hear people’s explanations about it
