Therapy with Dinah?

do you like to write batfic where jason, tim, or any other character gets to work through all their issues and find a bit of healing? i don’t blame you. if you’ve watched young justice or read wayne family adventures, you might know this woman:

her name is dinah lance, and she’s the second black canary! the first black canary, her mother, was a member of the JSA (like the justice league but different and older!), and dinah decided to follow in her footsteps.

she is one of the best martial artists in the dc universe. she is a member of the jsa, justice league, and barbara’s team the birds of prey! on the side, she’s also owned flower shops in seattle and gotham. being a florist is another way she follows in her mother’s footsteps! in some comic continuities, she’s also been a pop star.

what is interesting, though, is that she’s never been a therapist.

if you’re a fan of the young justice show, or if you read a lot of batfics on ao3, you might think of her as a therapist. i get that! but i’d love to tell you more about her comic character, and offer some suggestions as to who would make more sense as a therapist for your fics instead, if you’ll read on.

even though she’s not a therapist, dinah is really helpful and supportive to the people in her life. if you like jason, you may know this guy:

his name is roy harper, and dinah is a good friend to him! honestly, she’s the closest thing he has to a mother. when he was struggling with substance abuse, dinah is the one who helped him get clean.

dinah also has an adopted daughter named cynthia (sin)! she met her when she swapped lives with lady shiva (who is cass’s biological mother, if you’re keeping track). sin was being trained to be the next lady shiva, and dinah saved her.

you might also know that dinah is really good friends with barbara and cass! here’s them all together

i could go on and on about dinah’s relationships with each member of the batfamily. barbara is her best friend in the world, cass was one of the heroes she trusted enough to recruit to help her save her daughter, and she once even likened bruce to a father figure to her. there is so much history and love here.

she’s very caring and supportive, but that doesn’t make her a qualified therapist. and she’s WAY too busy to be one. but good news! she, herself, has at times seen a therapist named dr. annie green, who i could totally see her recommending to heroes in need.

dr. annie green has treated both green arrow and black canary (who had black hair back then yes) and helped them process their traumas. she’s also a trauma survivor herself! she became a therapist to help others like her. if you’re willing to read a few comics to know her whole story, all you have to do is read Green Arrow volume 2 issues #1-2 and #33!

tldr: plenty of comic characters have received mental health support from civilian therapists, despite their secret identities. dr. green is just one of so many therapist side characters to grace a comic panel. if you are looking for a therapist for the bats in your fic, i think having dinah recommend dr. annie green is an excellent alternative!

🥀 Hello, Tumblr.

I've been told that introducing yourself is the polite thing to do, so I suppose that's where I'll begin.

My name is Lenore Ashcroft. I'm twenty-four years old and work as a museum conservator here in Gotham City. My days are usually spent restoring old journals, repairing damaged books, preserving artwork, and convincing myself that centuries-old paper is much sturdier than it actually is. It requires a great deal of patience, but I find comfort in caring for things that have survived so much already.

Outside of work, I live a fairly quiet life. I enjoy reading (I'm always happy to hear book recommendations), baking far more bread than one person could reasonably eat, tending to my little garden, listening to old jazz records, and collecting antique teacups that I absolutely do not have room for.

I have a fondness for rainy afternoons, old architecture, museums, libraries, pressed flowers tucked between the pages of well-loved books, and candles that smell like cedar or vanilla. Black has always been my favorite color, despite everyone's insistence that I should "wear something brighter."

If you've stopped by to say hello, you're more than welcome to. My ask box is always open, whether you'd like to recommend a book, share a recipe, ask about museum work, or simply chat for a while. I may not answer immediately if I'm working, but I always do my best to reply.

I've been developing Lenore for a while now, and I finally decided to make her, her own blog. She's a museum conservator living in Gotham who somehow ends up becoming part of the Wayne family's lives. This blog follows my own AU, though it'll still be heavily inspired by Wayne Family Adventures, so expect lots of wholesome slice-of-life interactions, family shenanigans, and a very slow burn if romance ever happens.
