My pfp is actually my 2 OCs in my obey me AU - Ellie (left) and Cleo (right). So I thought I would post a little lore dump (kinda all over the place) plus bonus pics of the two of them together.
Ellie is the first human exchange student at RAD, Cleo is a demon attending RAD from one of the outer provinces of the Devildom.
The particular province that Cleo’s from is called Forefire. It is a lot more old fashioned than the capital. They speak in devil tongue, the landscape is much more rural, more demons push back against change / are hesitant to trust humans and angels, many of them dislike Diavolo and the crown in general as they often feel ignored in certain policy decisions and feel like they’re treated as second class citizens. They also practice a lot of old traditions and partake in rituals that humans might mistaken as pagan-adjacent. Their traditions often revolve around appeasing the old spirits, aka the restless spirits of the fairies that were killed when the first king of the devildom overtook the fairy realm. Some say the veil between realms is thinner in the outer provinces and that restless, hungry shadows of the spirits can slip through the cracks which is why they need to practice certain traditions on various days of significance to keep the spirits at bay.
The shadow veil is a recurring theme in my OBM AUs featuring Ellie. Shadows are drawn to pure light, including souls that radiate light. Ellie is one such soul.
Cleo is very skilled in abjuration magic for someone that was only taught via his grandmother growing up. Since magical practice without formal training and licensing is illegal in many places in the devildom, Cleo goes to RAD to earn a degree in abjuration.
Ellie and Cleo meet in their first semester. They are paired up in summoning class as lab partners. Cleo is drawn to Ellie’s unique magic signature and at one point tests out a certain sigil he had researched. It was meant to just be a ward to measure resonance between two peoples magic but he accidentally binds Ellie in a pact with him.
Due to the fragility of this pact, it causes a flare in Ellie’s light magic signature, essentially acting like a beacon for shadow entities from the veil. She begins having terrifying recurring nightmares about being chased by shadow figures. It eventually starts bleeding into real life; objects seem to shift, her face becomes distorted in mirrors, she hears echos on the other end of an empty dial tone on her D.D.D.
Lucifer is on top of it from the moment she informs him she’s having nightmares. He eventually traces the magic residue back to Cleo.
By this time, it’s been maybe 2 months since the nightmares started. Ellie and Cleo had only just gotten close maybe a month prior to Lucifer’s discovery. Cleo reveals he also has nightmares, they have a few concerning encounters, and they also have eerily similar dreams.
When Lucifer confronts him, Cleo confesses to his mistake, but insists he is working on reversing it. He just needs more time. Ellie overhears this, evesdropping on their discussion. She feels personally betrayed by Cleo and doesn’t understand the full concept of pacts so she also wonders if her feelings towards him are caused by the pact rather than legitimate connection (ofc it is legitimate).
Cleo begs her to hear him out but she forces distance between them. This deep rift despite no dissolving of the pact means that the shadows have an even easier way in.
Anyway, theres a lot going on with these two. The OG story is kind of tragic but I have a few variations of their relationship.
Here are my sketches of these cuties. Also, their designs definitely changed over the course of their character lifespan. The coloured one being the most recent. In that particular version of their story, there’s no massive fall out between the two like in the OG version… instead, they’re already dating when Ellie starts having concerning recurring nightmares. She ends up almost dying to a shadow entity that appears IRL, not in her dream, and Barbatos gives her an ultimatum. She can leave the devildom forever or she can go through a ritual to become a demon herself since shadow entities prey on and consume vulnerable souls, aka human souls, more easily than demon souls. She can’t bear the thought of leaving at that point, she sees the brothers as her second family and she’s deeply in love with Cleo; so she chooses to become a demon.
