The Keynote, oil on canvas (1915)

William Arthur Chase (English, 1878–1944) was an accomplished portrait and still life painter trained in London who regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy. He was committed to Academic Realism in a period of shifting modern styles.

Here, Chase depicts a woman completely absorbed in her sheet music during a private piano practice. The color strategy relies on a muted, harmonious palette of soft creams, deep wood tones, and subtle earth colors. Girl in a Red Kimono (Geesje Kwak) (1893–1895) George Hendrik Breitner (1857–1923), a prominent figure in the Amsterdam Impressionist movement, executed an iconic series of paintings that captured the late 19th-century Western fascination with Japonisme. This specific composition centers on Geesje Kwak, a sixteen-year-old milliner's shopgirl who served as Breitner’s primary model for the series.

The artwork stands apart from the painter's gritty, outdoor social realism street scenes, functioning instead as a study of luxury, texture, and pattern. Breitner uniquely integrated early photography into his process for this series, utilizing camera snapshots of Kwak pacing or resting in his Lauriergracht studio to preserve her exact, natural poses for translation onto the canvas. Seated luohan in a grotto, Jade (nephrite) (Qing dynasty) A luohan (arhat, in Sanskrit) is a Buddhist sage who has achieved enlightenment. This Chinese jade sculpture (18th century) was carved from a solid piece of translucent nephrite into a rocky cave.

The scene shows Kanaka, the eighth of sixteen luohans, sitting in deep meditation within the grotto. Made for a palace shrine under the Qianlong emperor, the piece bears an engraved inscription on the stone that names the sage and marks its royal origin. Loc.
